About this subject
Upon successful completion of this subject, the student should be able to:
- Discuss ports' functions, operations and management in logistics and supply chains
- Apply business and management principles and skills to enhance decision making in port operations, planning and management
- Critically examine contemporary issues of port development to develop strategies to improving port sustainability

This subject aims to expose you to contemporary management practices in ports. The design of this subject is suited to meet the needs of students at different stages in their careers and at different levels in their organisations. You will learn about the commercial functions of ports, port governance, the role of ports in global supply chains, port development, finance and pricing, port performance management, port competition and marketing, port environmental management, safety and security, application of technology in ports, and strategic port planning. Challenges related to these issues faced by ports and relevant strategies adopted for responding to them are also included.
Knowledge from other subjects such as JNB522 Business Logistics and JNB624 Supply Chain Management can be brought into play as you go through this study. For example, logistics and supply chain management has changed the role of a port leading to changes in port management, operation and strategies. This subject also links to JNB739 Strategic Management as strategic management skills can be applied to port planning.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
