About this subject
On successful completion of this subject, the student will be able to:
- Solve a range of real-world problems by using basic mathematical concepts and techniques
- Solve differential calculus problems using appropriate mathematical techniques
- Solve integral calculus problems using appropriate mathematical techniques
- Use vectors in two and three dimensions to determine dot and cross products and to describe straight lines and planes.

The applicability of calculus and linear algebra is so broad that fluency in it is essential for a successful career in a variety of areas including science and engineering. This subject is devoted to the conceptual and logical development of these two main areas of mathematics, gradually building the tools for solving innumerable problems of great practical importance. In the calculus part of the subject, a brief look at the Real Number System and their properties will lead us to the study of Functions in general and the study of special functions such as trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions. The notion of limits will be utilized to define continuity and differentiability of functions, emphasizing the importance of understanding the material conceptually and graphically. This area will also help establish the technical skills necessary to solve problems arising in practical situations. One highlight of the subject will be the discussion of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, which unifies differential and integral calculus. An introduction to two and three dimensional vector spaces will be an essential part of the subject as the knowledge in that area is vital, particularly for studies in engineering and physics. This subject is a required unit in the Bachelor of Science mathematics major and Bachelor of Engineering students.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
