About this subject
Upon successful completion of this subject, the student should be able to:
- Apply the basic elements of Mandarin Chinese, particularly the phonetic system (pinyin) of simplified Chinese characters, vocabulary, and sentence structure to construct subjects of communication.
- Interpret the meaning of basic written and spoken Mandarin Chinese, making use of pinyin and Chinese characters.
- Identify cultural and linguistic considerations for written and verbal communication.
- Communicate using pinyin input methods on electronic devices (e.g. computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones).
- Unit 1: Pinyin 1 - Chinese phonetic system (Pinyin); Tones; Chinese characters
- Unit 1: Pinyin 2 - Recognition of combined sounds; Stroke orders of Chinese characters; Grammar
- Unit 2: Greetings 1 - Daily greetings, saying Hello
- Unit 2: Greetings 2 - Are you busy? Asking what someone wants. Grammar
- Unit 3: Introduction 1 - Identifying people; asking someone's nationality
- Unit 3: Introduction 2 - Asking for permission; asking someone's name; introducing oneself; Grammar
- Unit 3: Introduction 3 - Meeting someone for the first time; talking about one's major; Grammar; Chinese characters
- Unit 4: Location - Looking for someone; saying goodbye, asking for directions, expressing thanks; grammar
- Unit 5: Comments and suggestions - Asking someone to repeat something; refusing or declining politely; grammar
- Unit 6: Family - Talking about one's family; asking about someone's occupation; talking about one's university
- Unit 6: Family - Grammar; Chinese characters
This is an introductory subject for students with little or no prior knowledge of Chinese. This introductory subject is for anyone who is interested in the Chinese language and/or has the need to learn Chinese for business or academic purposes. This subject provides an introduction to all four basic language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. It provides students with opportunities to establish essential communicative skills with a focus on practical, everyday use of the Chinese language and incorporating some socio-cultural knowledge. Selected topics and situations, such as exchanging personal information, asking about directions and telling your hobbies etc., all come from real life scenarios. There is no prerequisite required for this introductory subject.

Single subject FAQs
What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.

How do I enrol?
When you’ve made your choice, click ‘Enrol now’ on the relevant course page and follow the prompts to begin your enrolment. We’ll ask you to supply some supporting documentation, including proof of your identity, your tax file number, and a unique student identifier (USI) during this process.
