About this subject
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Explain the provision of evidence based bio-psychosocial assessment of alcohol and other drug use
- Identify risks associated with alcohol and other drug use and manage in accordance with the best available evidence
- Discuss current legislative requirements related to assessment and management of addictive disorders
- Module 1: Assessing Addiction (Wks 1-3)
- Principles of assessment and models of care
- Interpersonal communication and self awareness
- Comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment
- Module 2: Treating and Managing Addiction (Wks 4-7)

- Module 4: Professional Practice Guidelines and Legislation (Wks 11-12)
In this subject you will develop the evidence-based assessment and planning skills required in your work with alcohol and other drug dependent clients in a public health framework. This includes clinical assessment of alcohol and drug issues and identification of co-occurring disorders. You will demonstrate understanding of current legislative requirements. A range of case studies will be used to explore risk assessment and risk management perspectives.
