About this subject
By the end of this 10-week course, you’ll be able to:
- Identify current technology trends and their impact on the network with consideration of strategic business objectives.
- Demonstrate an understanding of networking models and the role of protocols and standards.
- Based on specified requirements, design and configure a small to medium sized network using appropriate hardware and network protocols.
- Design and apply an appropriate IP addressing scheme to fulfil given requirements.

Embark on a journey to master the essential networking concepts and technologies needed to design and implement small to medium-sized networks.
Gain a comprehensive understanding of network topologies, devices, and characteristics tailored for small to medium-sized environments. Explore the basics of network protocols and communications, and dive into the OSI and TCP/IP networking models. Learn about the functions and standards of the physical layer, network media, data link layer, media access control, and Ethernet.
Understand network layer protocols and the fundamentals of routing, as well as the roles and protocols of the transport layer. Get proficient in IP addressing and subnetting, and familiarise yourself with application layer protocols and services. Delve into considerations for network design, basics of network security, and network management, along with the essentials of network operating systems and configuration of networking devices.
This is a second-year course from UniSA Online’s Information Technology degree. When studying this course as a "single subject", prior knowledge from INFT 1024 or equivalent will support your success.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.

How do I enrol?
When you’ve made your choice, click ‘Enrol now’ on the relevant course page and follow the prompts to begin your enrolment. We’ll ask you to supply some supporting documentation, including proof of your identity, your tax file number, and a unique student identifier (USI) during this process.
