About this subject
On completion of this subject students should be able to achieve the following learning outcomes:
- Know and be able to implement the processes of professional practice utilised by most universities in pre-service teacher education programs.
- Engage with the research literature on quality teaching and learning as a basis for the evaluation of beginning and established teachers.
- Critically evaluate the research literature on the impact of peer mentoring and coaching practices on student achievement.
- Critically evaluate contemporary AITSL standards and tools that inform quality professional practice supervision.
- Analyse and synthesize accumulated understandings from the research literature throughout the course to reflect on approaches that might better enable participants to lead effective observation of beginning, early career and established teachers.

This subject seeks to develop both skills and knowledge in the area of mentoring pre-service and graduate teachers and the peer coaching of established teachers. It explores the various dimensions of 'clinical supervision: induction, classroom observation, feedback and reflective practice, mentoring and building collegial relationships within communities of practice. In addition, the subject provides participants with a common language for describing mentees’ and coachee’s achievements and progress. The impact of current research on classroom practice will also be explored in order to establish a standard of performance for student teachers, graduates and established teachers. Contemporary resources developed by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) will be critically evaluated; particularly the Australian teacher performance and development framework, the Australian professional standards for teachers and the Australian professional standards for principals. The subject also examines contemporary research on the impact of mentoring /coaching programs for early career and established teachers.
