About this subject
On completion of this subject students should be able to achieve the following learning outcomes:
- Analyse the current contemporary issues, both nationally and internationally, that have an impact on the provision of care to the acutely ill adult
- Identify and analyse the indicators of clinical deterioration
- Evaluate the need for and use of, a rapid clinical assessment system 4. Apply the ABCDE clinical assessment system to the identification and initial interventions required to manage the clinically deteriorating patient
- Identify priorities of care and nursing needs for the deteriorating acutely ill patient
- Discuss the psychosocial -considerations that impact an acutely ill person and their family during an episode of care
- How to identify the deteriorating Adult patient

Building on existing knowledge of the Registered Nurse, this work integrated learning course, set in the high dependency health care environment, enables the student to recognise and respond to the deteriorating acutely ill patient. Students apply evidence-based principles of care for critically ill patients with diverse needs. Identifying common changes in pathophysiology, resulting in acute illness across a broad spectrum of body systems, students develop strategies to evaluate and manage care. Core elements of acute care nursing that underpin this course include exploration of the professional and ethical position of the Registered Nurse.
