About this subject
On completion of this subject students should be able to achieve the following learning outcomes:
- Comprehensive Mental State Examination and Assessment of the acutely psychiatrically unwell person.
- Describe the access and pathways and utilisation of resources in managing psychiatric emergencies.
- Be able to describe a range of crisis intervention techniques and theories
- Demonstrate skill in applying models of crisis intervention.
- Show and awareness of contemporary treatment practices including brief interventions.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skill in using Solution Focused Therapy.
- Mental health assessment
- Managing psychiatric emergencies
- Crisis intervention techniques and theories
- Contemporary treatment interventions
The subject will :
- Examine current contemporary trends and practice in delivering psychiatric care with emphasis on acute crisis and psychiatric emergencies.
- Address treatment/care options within community settings and the integration and partnership with Non Government Organisations, General Practitioners, Police and other emergency services.
- Enable the ethical decisions determining hospital and community based treatment options.
- Reference the National Mental Health Standards and current West Australian Mental Health Division strategies and objectives.
- Patient case study (40%)
