Cellular and Molecular Biology
About this subject
On completion of this subject students should be able to achieve the following learning outcomes:
- Compare the structure and function of viruses, and of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
- Outline the major groups of biologically important molecules, their genetic structure and their function in living organisms.
- Explain how genetic information is transferred during the processes of cellular division to enable the growth and reproduction of living organisms.
- Examine current and potential applications of genomics and the ethical dilemmas involved in their use.
- Chemistry of living cells
- Cellular form and function
- Cellular differentiation
- The cell cycle
- Chromosomal basis of inheritance
- Molecular basis of inheritance
- Flow of genetic information
- Gene expression, epigenetics and biotechnology
- Genetic and genomic testing; Ethical and psychosocial aspects of genomic medicine
The subject outlines the principles of cell and molecular biology as underpinnings of life and organism function. Topics covered include cell structure and function, the molecular aspects of the cell cycle and the molecular basis of genetics. Gene structure, the control of gene expression, regulation of gene function, molecular processes involved in protein synthesis and the role of genomics and of gene therapies in medicine will be examined.
