Social Culture in Chinese Reading II
About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- read and comprehend texts ranging from others’ opinion, filial piety, hometown complex, endurance, respecting elders, taboo, the concept of time, all for children, golden mean, to body language, written for a Chinese readership at an intermediate to advanced level;
- demonstrate a sound understanding of the ten socio-culture norms in modern China;
- apply extended knowledge of these socio-cultural norms in Chinese society; and
- critically analyse and apply knowledge to write reflective texts in Chinese characters (handwritten) on these cultural norms.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.

This subject serves as a companion to CHIN350: Chinese Social Culture and Reading I and is designed to further develop your understanding, with topics ranging from others’ opinion, filial piety, hometown complex, endurance and respecting elders through to taboo, the concept of time, all for children, golden mean and body language. In studying this subject, you will also sharpen your Chinese reading comprehension and writing skills and further develop your understanding of socio-cultural norms in China today.
Assessment 1: Online Quizzes (10 quizzes on the ten cultural themes) 2500 words (equivalent): Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-3;
Assessment 2: Reading Comprehension: Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-3;
Assessment 3: Reflective Reading: 800 Chinese characters. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-4.- Assessment 1 - Online Quizzes: 10 online quizzes on the ten cultural themes. 2500 words (equivalent) (50%)
- Assessment 2 - Reading Comprehension (20%)
- Assessment 3 - Reflective Reading: 800 Chinese characters (30%)
