Social Culture in Chinese Reading I
About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- read and comprehend themed texts ranging from mannerism, privacy, humility, inside and outside, implicitness, face, money, spouse preference, to social hierarchy, written for a Chinese readership at an intermediate to advanced level;
- demonstrate a sound understanding of the ten socio-culture norms in modern China;
- apply extended knowledge of these socio-cultural norms in Chinese society; and
- critically analyse and apply knowledge to write reflective texts in Chinese characters (handwritten) on these cultural norms.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
Are you interested in learning about the ten socio-cultural norms of the oldest living civilisation of the world, with the second largest economy and a super-scale market of 1.4 billion population? This subject is designed to help you gain a mastery of China’s inherited cultural values, along with a competitive edge in interacting with Chinese people in high-employment areas such as tourism, cultural activities and business practices. You’ll develop your knowledge of key Chinese socio-cultural norms with a firm foundation in topics ranging from mannerisms, privacy, humility, inside and outside, implicitness and face through to money, spouse preference and social hierarchy. You will also sharpen your Chinese reading comprehension and writing skills, and develop a well-rounded understanding of socio-cultural norms in China today. This study can be expanded upon in the companion subject CHIN370: Chinese Social Culture and Reading II.
Assessment 1: Reflective Reading: 800 Chinese characters. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-4;
Assessment 2: Online Quizzes (10 quizzes on the ten cultural themes): 2500 words (equivalent). Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-3;
Assessment 3: Reading Comprehension: Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-3.- Assessment 1 - Reflective Reading: 800 Chinese characters (30%)
- Assessment 2 - Online Quizzes: 10 online quizzes on the ten cultural themes. 2500 words (equivalent) (50%)
- Assessment 3 - Reading Comprehension (20%)
