Introduction to Literature: Children's Books

About this subject

  • Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

    1. demonstrate familiarity with a variety of literary texts for children and young adults to develop knowledge and understanding of genre, style, and literary techniques;
    2. apply skills in close reading and analysis of literary texts, including an understanding of literary techniques and the language of literary analysis;
    3. critically read or view a range of texts through relevant literary and cultural theories to enhance knowledge of genre, narrative and ideology;
    4. understand a range of concepts involved in analysing children's texts, including the significance of the implied reader, the power of ideological contexts, and the role of literature in childhood; and
    5. use appropriate conceptual language for discussing literary texts and texts written for young readers.
