About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research into how students learn to write and the implications for classroom teaching and learning (GTSD 1.2.1);
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of language, literacy and texts (and their grammatical and visual features) relevant to teaching writing and creating in the Australian Curriculum: English and the NSW English K–10 Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum (GTSD 2.1.1);
- demonstrate knowledge of strategies for teaching writing and creating that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, including strategies for teaching explicitly about the context, language features (paragraph, sentence, word levels) and multimodal features of texts (GTSD 1.3.1, 2.3.1, 2.6.1);
- demonstrate knowledge of strategies for teaching literacy, and their application in writing and creating texts in English and other learning areas (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.5.1);
- apply an understanding of assessment strategies, including informal and formal, diagnostic, formative and summative approaches, to assess student learning against curriculum achievement standards and/or syllabus outcomes for writing and creating (GTSD 5.2.1, 5.4.1); and
- design an integrated unit of work using knowledge of curriculum, assessment and reporting, student learning and effective strategies for teaching writing and representing in English, including strategies to evaluate the unit (GTSD 2.3.1, 2.6.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.6.1).
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
The subject will extend your knowledge of different types of texts and the language and visual features typically found in those texts. You will apply this knowledge to your understanding of language and literacy teaching and learning strategies, with a focus on the demands of writing and composing text. You will design an integrated unit of work, including a sample sequence of lessons using a text-based cycle of teaching and learning as the foundation for a principled and explicit approach to writing pedagogy. In addition, you will identify teaching and learning strategies to support students from diverse backgrounds.
Assessment 1 Assignment: 1200 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1, 5;
Assessment 2 Portfolio: 2400 words (equivalent). Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-6;
Assessment 3 Online Quiz: 400 words (equivalent). Relates to Learning Outcomes 1, 2.- Assignment 1 - Essay (30%)
