Developing Advanced Asian Language Skills
About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- apply and demonstrate advanced level language skills to interpret texts in the target language across a range of genres and contexts;
- demonstrate advanced communicative competence through the ability to effectively convey knowledge and ideas in the target language across a broad range of contexts and genres;
- demonstrate specialist critical language skills and strategies to generate solutions to communicative challenges in the target language; and
- apply and demonstrate extended knowledge of the cultural/social/historical/literary issues discussed in the target language.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
This subject enables you to advance your second language proficiency in Chinese, Indonesian, or Japanese through a singular or holistic focus on the four macro language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
You will develop these receptive and productive skills through practical tasks and critical engagement with authentic material in the target language across a range of genres, while drawing links to the sociocultural context in which the language is embedded. These tasks will not only enhance communicative competence, but also knowledge of the broader sociocultural context.
To ensure the topic you enrol in is appropriate for your Program of Study, you must apply to the unit coordinator for permission to enrol at least three weeks prior to the commencement of the relevant trimester.
