About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- understand contemporary theories about crime prevention, their limitations and policy implications, and be able to engage in debates that transmit coherent knowledge and ideas to others;
- demonstrate a range of skills for the practical application of crime prevention theory in organisational and community contexts;
- evaluate crime prevention projects and factors that impact on the adoption and implementation of crime prevention policies; and
- demonstrate autonomy and judgement through research and analysis of ways to prevent crime.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
Crime prevention can reduce costs associated with the criminal justice system as well as the social and emotional costs for victims of crime. In this subject you will examine the theory, policy, practice and politics of crime prevention. You will develop skills that will enable you to understand different crime prevention policies and practices and evaluate their effectiveness. You will also acquire practical knowledge related to the design, planning and implementation of crime prevention strategies and policies in a range of community and organisational contexts. Drawing on your learning in this subject, you will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills you develop to real-world problems by working with key criminal justice industry partners. Together the theoretical knowledge and the problem-solving skills gained in the subject will aid you in both researching and implementing practical responses to crime
Assessment 1: Crime Prevention Strategy: 3000 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-4;
The Crime Prevention Strategy is selected from a prescribed range of real-world problems developed in collaboration with key criminal justice industry partners. In this unit, students work directly with industry and apply their criminological knowledge and skills to provide possible solutions to real-world issues and receive formative feedback.
Assessment 2: Mid-trimester Quiz: 1250 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-4;
Assessment 3: Take Home Examination: 1250 words (2hr 15 mins). Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-4.- Crime Prevention Strategy (50%)
