Classical Languages Through Reading
About this subject
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply reading skills to more complex and extended Greek or Latin texts;
- independently apply knowledge and skills to provide solutions to questions about an ancient language;
- analyse more complex texts using an appropriate metalanguage to complete a range of activities;
- communicate information about an ancient language in its social and political context;
- demonstrate technical and theoretical knowledge of an ancient language; and
- utilise technical and theoretical knowledge to discuss how Greek and Latin can be used by authors to express ideas in a range of contexts.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
This subject builds on the work undertaken in CLLA101 and focuses on developing your ability to read ancient texts. You are required to remain in the language strand already selected in CLLA101, either Greek or Latin. By the end of the subject, you will have read a considerable amount of selected Greek or Latin texts, improved your command of the language and developed your ability to analyse both English and your chosen Classical Language.
Greek Strand - Assessment 1: Five short assignments - grammatical and translation exercises: 2000 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-6;
Greek Strand - Assessment 2: Take Home Exam: 2000 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-6.
Latin Strand - Assessment 1: Five short assignments and quizzes comprising grammatical and translation exercises. Quizzes are conducted online: 2000 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-6;
Latin Strand - Assessment 2: Take Home Exam: 2000 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-6.- Greek Strand: Assessment 1 - 5 short assignments - grammatical and translation exercises. (50%)
- Greek Strand: Assessment 2 - Take Home Exam - 2 hrs 15 mins (50%)
- Latin Strand: Assessment 1 - 5 short assignments and quizzes comprising grammatical and translation exercises. Quizzes are conducted online. (60%)
- Latin strand: Assessment 2 - Take Home Exam - 2 hrs 15 mins (40%)
