Introduction to Psychology I
About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to
- Demonstrate broad knowledge of the underlying principles, theories and concepts, and skills in the core topics of introductory psychology.
- Demonstrate research-informed pursuit of scholarly inquiry by analysing, critiquing, and discussing theory and research in introductory psychology using scientific evidence.
- Communicate effectively utilising multiple modes to convey thoughtful, scientifically driven information about introductory psychology.
- Apply introductory psychology knowledge in a manner that is culturally appropriate and sensitive to diversity of individuals. .
- Demonstrate knowledge and behaviour of appropriate ethics and values in psychology.
- A week-by-week guide to the topics you will explore in this subject will be provided in your study materials.
Please note: This subject is available in Macquarie Session 3, which is an intensive semester that spans only 5 intensive teaching weeks, plus a mid-semester recess and an assessment period. Students are advised to enrol in only one or two subjects in Session 3. Students who would prefer to take the unit over 13 teaching weeks should enrol in the Session 1 offering.
In this unit, you will be introduced to the broad and diverse field of psychology. A range of topics in psychology will be covered in lectures and tutorial activities, learning both theoretical basis and practical applications of psychological science. Key communication skills will be developed and demonstrated by working on a group presentation, applying the empirical science of psychology for broader social good.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
