About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Plan, draft and revise an excerpt of long-form fiction that demonstrates control of fiction techniques and genre.
- Analyse the relationship between critical theories and creative practice.
- Develop the ability to give and receive constructive feedback while managing deadlines.
- Write a professional synopsis that conforms to industry standards.

In this subject you will extend your understanding of creative writing by developing long-form fiction in a chosen genre. This will be an excerpt of a novel or novella. In your creative and critical practice you will consider how the longer form affects the use of technical elements such as plot and structure, POV, character and setting. You will engage in an intensive revision process, assisted by peer-feedback. The subject will offer further opportunities to develop your professional practice through synopsis writing, reading to peers, integrating workshop comments and editing after a workshop.
This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
- Creative piece (2700 words including a 450 word synopsis) Students submit an excerpt of an extended creative work and a related synopsis. (60%)
- Critical piece (900 words) Students submit an essay analysing the relationship between their creative work-in-progress and critical theory. (20%)
- Workshop presentations and peer feedback (equivalent to 900 words) Students present their work-in-progress during designated seminars and receive written and verbal feedback from other students. (20%)

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
