About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Apply interdisciplinary GSDS concepts to understanding issues and debates regarding gender and sexuality.
- Produce a sustained, complex written argument about gender and sexuality theories.
- Review gender sexuality and diversity studies theories and concepts in different historical and cultural contexts.

Drawing on perspectives of key thinkers in queer and trans theory, critical race theory, and disability/crip studies, we explore the ways we are taught to uphold and upkeep a disciplined (and disciplining) body across different times, places, texts, and histories. We hone skills in research, theory, and critical analysis as we explore how 'marginal bodies' have been and are positioned, represented, and thought in popular culture, social movements, and institutions.
Topics include feminist approaches to the body, gender euphoria and queer utopias, writing back to the colony, and posthumanism. The subject's blend of theory, reading, research, and creative writing promotes new ways of thinking about gender, the body, and society.
This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
- Blog posts to forums: 250 words each, 1,500 words total. Students will write and post 5 blog entries to our LMS forums related to subject content. (30%)
- Annotated bibliography and project plan (800 word equivalent). Students will develop and write an annotated bibliography and project plan. (20%)
- Research/reflective essay or creative artefact and exegesis: 2000 words (or equivalent). Students will use their project plan and annotated bibliography to provide a framework for final submission. (50%)

Past La Trobe University students who have previously completed GSD2GES (Gender and Sexuality: Contemporary Debates) are ineligible to enrol in this subject.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
