About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Identify and analyse the characteristics of early (Romantic), Victorian, Modern and Postmodern gothic texts.
- Recognise and understand the significance of scholarly articles to the field of gothic literature.
- Understand concepts that are central to the gothic (including sensibility; the uncanny; terror and horror; masculine and feminine gothic).
- Write a clearly structured; well-researched; and well-presented essay at a third year level

- Contemporary Gothic Texts
This subject offers you an introduction to the historical contexts and form of the gothic. Beginning with the key 18th century novels of Lewis and Radcliffe and ending with various 21st century incarnations of the gothic, you will explore the way in which key elements and conventions of the gothic (such as the uncanny, the vampire and the zombie, masculine and feminine gothic, and the monstrous) develop over the history of the genre. You will also explore some of the ways in which the gothic has been translated and adapted in popular culture, in television, and on film.
This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling.
- Worksheet on an important gothic concept. This fulfills the requirement for an early assessment (400 word equivalence). (10%)
- Presentation (either in class or recorded approx 5 mins) on an article concerning the gothic and associated planning document (800 words). (20%)
- Essay (1000 words) (25%)
- Research essay (1,800 words) (45%)

Past La Trobe University students who have previously completed ENG2GOT (The Gothic and Its Children) or ENG3GOT (Gothic Literature and Its Children) are ineligible to enrol in this subject.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
