About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Apply methodologies in regard to system-level security issues, including the threat of and counter-measures for intruders and viruses, and the use of firewalls and trusted systems.
- Describe cryptographic algorithms and protocols underlying network security applications, including encryption, hash functions, digital signatures, and key exchange.
- Identify techniques for analysing security and privacy issues by using important network security tools and applications, including Kerberos, PGP, and IPSec, SSL/TLS.
- Identify possible risks and ethical and social considerations relevant to information privacy and security issues.
- Introduction to cybersecurity
- Network endpoint security
- Introduction to cryptography
- Symmetric cryptography

- Data integrity algorithms
- Mutual trust, public key infrastructure and X.509
- Layer 5 Network Security: Kerberos

This subject begins with an overview of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) architecture and security attacks on system services, and a discussion of different existing security mechanisms. The main focus includes cryptography, system security, network and web security. The students learn:
- Cryptographic algorithms and protocols, underlying network security applications including single-key and public-key encryption methods, hash functions, digital signatures and key exchange;
- Intrusion detection systems and firewalls that can be used to protect a computer system from security threats, such as intruders, viruses, and worm;
- The use of cryptographic algorithms and security protocols for providing network and internet security in terms of user authentication/identification, IP security and Web security.
- One 2-hour final examination (2000-word equivalent). (60%)
- Two 1-hour problem solving tests (800-word equivalent each, 1600 words in total) to be held in Weeks 4 and 9/10. (30%)
- Eight weekly minor workshop assignments from Week 3 to Week 12 (800-word equivalent total). (10%)

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
