About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Use health information as a dynamic and strategic resource competently by summarising the content, format, and uses of clinical information for patient care, with a particular focus on a client’s hospital record.
- Explain the movement of a patient and their record throughout the health service and analyse the flow of health data from collection (at point-of-care) to post discharge.
- Apply appropriate health information standards and understanding of key elements of administrative and clinical information systems to describe individual clinical data.
- Explain the role(s) of Health Information Managers in the management of a Health Information Service.
- Review the operational processes of records management and patient information systems.
- Use academic and health industry resources to critically examine and communicate health topics.
- Demonstrate high professional ethical standards, participate in multidisciplinary team environments, and demonstrate awareness of the social and ethical implications of professional and personal activities.

In this subject you will be introduced to types, uses and applications, of personal and aggregate health data and other information within Australian healthcare agencies. Administrative and clinical systems used for capturing health information on individual patients and clients will be examined. Clinical recording methodologies, health information standards and decision support systems are introduced. The uses of aggregate data are studied in relation to information systems; health information flow; and health data quality and integrity. Electronic and manual systems for health record identification, filing, and tracking are discussed. Case studies, enquiries, and professional placements are used to apply critical theories to health applications. You will integrate theory and practice by undertaking a short five-day professional practice placement in the Health Information Service of a healthcare agency to which you are assigned. Hospital on-site placements are a core requirement for all students regardless of the instance (blended or online) in which you are enrolled. To meet professional competency requirements students must pass both the professional placement and academic components of the subject.
- Individual report (1500 words equivalent) Pass is required to demonstrate appropriate understanding of placement. (40%)
- Final Text – one hour (1000 words equivalent) (30%)
- Individual quiz – 30 minutes (500 words equivalent) (10%)
- Group assignment (Equivalent to 750 words per student) (20%)
- Hurdle requirements: Pre-placement briefing attendance, compliance with pre-placement documentation and immunisation requirements, successful completion of 5 days (35 hours) on placement (pass grade required). (0%)
