Human Pathophysiology
About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Apply the principles of General Pathophysiology to selected human disorders and reparative states, describing how these general pathophysiologic processes impact on possible clinical courses and outcomes in an afflicted individual.
- Explain cellular and biochemical changes that underlie the development of systemic diseases (i.e. Systemic Pathophysiology and relate these changes to the likely clinical course and outcomes of an afflicted individual.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills, individually and as part of a team, by communicating scientific results, information, or arguments to a range of audiences, for a range of purposes, and using a variety of modes.
- Cell Injury, Inflammation and Healing
- Blood and fluid disorders
- Neoplasia and Cancer
- Respiratory and Neurological Diseases
- Systemic and Musculoskeletal Diseases
In this subject, you will examine disorders which may be experienced by individuals over the life-span, emphasizing the basic pathological processes that underlie diseases and the risk factors and contributing causes of disorders. Specifically, general pathological processes will be discussed with emphasis on disturbed function, adaptation to injury, inflammation, tissue healing, immunological disorders, neoplasia, fluid imbalance, thrombosis, embolism and vascular disorders. In addition to general pathological processes, specific pathological conditions of body systems e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, gastrointestinal and skeletal systems along with diabetes will be addressed. You will consolidate and apply their knowledge of pathophysiology by communicating a disease state in authentic format to scientific peers and non-expert audiences.
- Inflammation and wound healing interviews (400 word equivalent) (10%)
- One 1 hour General pathophysiology mid-semester exam (1,000-word equivalent). (30%)
- Communicating Disease project (1500-words equivalent) Students will present their work via a report, a communication piece designed for a specific target audience and via an oral presentation. (30%)
- One 1 hour systemic pathophysiology exam (1000-words equivalent). (30%)
