About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Apply Australian Coding Standards, Conventions and ratified advice accurately in health classification practice at an intermediate level.
- Analyse clinical information to inform clinical documentation improvement.
- Work collaboratively in internal quality control practices for health classification.
- Apply Australian Coding Standards, Conventions and ratified advice at a level of expertise and within timeframes that align with industry expectations.
- Classification of diseases using the current Australian version of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-AM)
- Classification of health interventions using the current Australian version of the World Health Organization's Australian Classification for Health Interventions (ACHI)
- Classification of diseases and health interventions using the current Australian version of the World Health Organization's Australian Coding Standards (ACS)
- Ratified national and jurisdictional clinical coding advice
- Medical record abstraction
- Clinical documentation improvement
In this subject, you will develop your competence and confidence in the use of the current edition of the Australian-Modified version of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases, the Australian Classification of Health Interventions, and the Australian Coding Standards for accurate assignment of codes in a timely manner. You will gain familiarity in searching for and applying ratified coding advice to your code assignment. You will develop your working knowledge of medical science and terminology and be introduced to common clinical documentation deficiencies and methods for improvement. This subject is graded as a Pass (P) or Fail (F). A mark of 75% or greater is required to achieve a Pass grade in line with industry standards and expectations.
Recommended for students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.
- One individual written assignment (500-words equivalent) (15%)
- One team written assignment (250-words equivalent per student) (10%)
- One 1-hour online test (1,000-words equivalent) (25%)
- One 2-hour online examination (2,000-words equivalent) (50%)
- Hurdle: Overall subject pass mark of 75% required to meet industry expectations of employability (0%)
