In this subject pre-service teachers explore the fundamentals of literacy development and mathematical thinking for teaching and learning for children from birth to 8 years. Pre-service teachers are presented with the theories of early learning alongside the practicalities of shaping appropriate learning experiences for early learners. The notion of curriculum for young children is addressed using the Early Years Learning Framework and the Victorian Early Years Learning & Development Framework, and the Victorian/Australian Curriculum documents. Pre-service teachers will examine early mathematical concepts and processes; such as one to one correspondence, matching and sorting, memory, spatial reasoning and problem solving; and early literacy concepts and processes, including repetition, imitation, text exploration, reading and a range of texts. Representational processes such as drawing, painting and writing, including left/right orientation will be considered. Music, rhythm, beat and movement will be incorporated as tools of creativity which enhance the development of language, literacy and mathematics.
