About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Demonstrate writing that uses form and structure to convey meaning
- Discuss an array of ideas and theories related to memoir and creative nonfiction
- Engage critically with texts about the self, and particularly the self in relation to nature

In this subject, you are introduced to key forms of creative nonfiction, and the techniques and tools required to write these well. We conduct interlinked experiments in writing and, importantly, reading across a wide range of forms. You will read and interrogate many genres, including memoir, travel, reportage and history. You are encouraged to engage critically with ideas about nonfiction, including: the idea of the narrator and narrative voice; authenticity, objectivity and truth; the relationship between self and others, places, nature and identity; form and genre; humanness and memory; pasts and presents.
This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
- Multiple choice test on readings and material in the first three weeks. Equivalent to 400 words. (10%)
- Assignment 1: 1500 words. Formative. Folio of edited weekly writing activities. Detailed feedback provided on writing against set criteria including structural integrity, meaning, creativity, connection with lectures and readings, craft and technical d (35%)
- Assignment 3: 2000 words. Major piece of creative non-fiction plus a short critical reflection. In lieu of an exam, so feedback is offered by peers in class before submission, and then via rubric against set criteria including structural integrity, mea (45%)
- Weekly writing activity of 400 words posted on the LMS and a response to a question on the week's readings to be released in the lecture. (10%)

Past La Trobe University students who have previously completed ENG2WAB (Writing Autobiography), or ENG3WAB (Writing Creative Nonfiction) are ineligible to enrol in this subject.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
