About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Synthesise and interpret key aspects of research studies.
- Prepare and present health research in different formats that can include basic statistical analyses and presentation of data.
- Compare key aspects of research design across different research studies.
- Work effectively individually and in teams to produce reviews, reports and posters.
- Introduction to systematic reviews

- Introduction to qualitative (thematic analyse) & quantitative (Chi square & T-test) data analyse
- Reporting quantitative and qualitative results
- Structuring a scientific report and interpreting findings
- Producing scientific posters comparing different research designs
In this subject, you will learn how to apply research to solve real world problems of the sort that you will encounter in your practice as health professionals. You will develop their confidence in using research by synthesizing evidence in the form of narrative summaries, gaining basic statistical knowledge needed to prepare data reports and critically comparing different research approaches. Students will also take part in a poster conference in the last week of semester. The subject incorporates modules that focus on specific research skills and their practical application. Members of the La Trobe research community will present their work to demonstrate practical applications of research skills relevant to health professionals.
The blended course design makes use of collaborative online spaces, feedback mechanisms and quizzes for evaluative and formative tasks. PHE2AHR is a second year subject. To ensure your best opportunity for success in meeting the subject's intended learning outcomes, you will need to have completed at least 120 credit points before enrolling.
- Introductory systematic review Part A (early assessment): Introduction Section & Grid (500 words equivalent) (10%)
- Introductory systematic review Part B: Final submission (1000 words equivalent) (25%)
- Data report (equivalent 2,000 words) (45%)
- Poster - group assignment (equivalent 250 words each) (20%)

Single subject FAQs
What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
