Introduction to ER and HR Law
About this subject
After successfully completing this subject, you should be able to:
- Identify and describe the primary sources of employment relations law in Australia, the role of law in labour relations, common law and legislative rights and obligations of employees and employers;
- Explain how the law regulates the formation, terms and termination of contracts and other rights and obligations in the workplace;
- Explain the statutory processes by which the parties in industrial relations might reach resolution of disputes and determine conditions of employment;
- Apply practical employment relations legal research, analysis and writing skills necessary for their future roles in the workplace as industrial relations, employment relations and human resource management specialists;
- Identify and critically analyse the relevant material facts and legal issues in relation to legal hypothetical problems and apply the relevant law to those facts and reach a valid conclusion.

Failure to keep up to date with employment law can lead to fines and other penalties. This course helps prepare you for a career in Employment Relations and Human Resource Management by building the skills necessary to navigate Australia's legal system. It begins with a review of the foundations of the legal system before examining the system of laws governing employment in contemporary Australia. Through this course, you will develop necessary problem solving skills to use in workplace settings. This course is not available to LAW students unless the student is also enrolled in a Double Degree Program majoring in Employment Relations and where it is undertaken as a compulsory course.
Students should not enrol in this subject of they have previously completed 3015EHR Employment Relations Law and 2015EHR Introduction to ER and HR Law at Griffith University.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
