About this subject
After successfully completing this subject, you should be able to:
- Identify and demonstrate the similarities and differences between ones own culture and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
- Evaluate and report on the importance of workplace Human Resource Management policies, like racism and discrimination, when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, other organisations and the wider communities.
- Reflect on the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' history, cultural values and traditions in a business context.
- Course Introduction and History of First Peoples History, culture and knowledges
- Cultural Traditions: First Peoples Storytelling, Dreamtime and Lore
- Impact of Government Policies: Pre and Post Colonisation

- Language and Cross Cultural Communication

- The design to survive and the storytelling series (provides questions for reflection and debate)
- Exploring the Connected Continent and Navigating the Future series (provides a series of questions for reflection and debate)
- A series of examples of RAPS and shows how organisations create, embed, and enact them in Australia
- A series of documentary records of the Voice, the debate the outcome and the future (provides questions for discussion in the workshops)
- Summary of the course and highlights key strategies for the student to apply in their current or future roles in working with indigenous Australians and their businesses
This course describes the communication and work practice skills and knowledge required to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the various business industry contexts. It deals specifically with cross-cultural awareness, competencies and issues involving working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, organisations and communities. Graduates from this course will possess the knowledge required to gain a better understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander 'ways of thinking' by learning more about Indigenous society (knowledges, traditions, and culture), and the appropriate use of protocols when engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their businesses and the wider communities.
Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously studied 3200GBS Engaging with First Peoples, 3100AFE Indigenous Australians: Everybody's Business, 3100GBS Indigenous Australians: Everybody's Business at Griffith University.

What’s a single subject?
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
How can I use single subjects to get into a full degree?
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
