About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- analyse issues of global sustainability and unsustainability and the principles of sustainability thinking in contemporary educational contexts
- critique the impact of futures focused influences on education in international and national contexts within a neoliberal framework
- evaluate dominant global educational paradigms based on futures-focused and transdisciplinary ideas and concepts
- create a futures focused, transdisciplinary education focused sustainability action plan and/or strategy
- Module 1 - Educating for a future: Exploring sustainability and education
- Module 2 – Designing education for a future
- Module 3 - Change mindsets, tipping points, and levers for change
Social movements such as Extinction Rebellion, the global student strikes for climate action, and the rise of youth activists like Greta Thunberg indicate young people around the world are demanding action on climate change, sustainability, inequity and social injustice. Across the globe, youth are speaking up demanding an education that has direct real-world relevance - one that helps humans confront the “wicked problems” in the Anthropocene that beset the planet. Reconfiguring education beyond the “accepted” approaches to schooling and education to meet the challenges of a complex global environment has now become a priority. In this unit, students will explore key existential, environmental, and geopolitical crises and tensions and critique contemporary education practices and policies across a range of contexts. Employing the principles of reflexivity and transdisciplinarity, students will also explore pedagogical approaches that promote sustainability by preparing learners to better understand, navigate and address crises, especially focused on learners’ contexts.
