3D Modelling and Digital Fabrication
About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- define and describe selected design qualities through testing, research and analysis
- use exploratory process to experience and investigate method of digital fabrication
- communicate to professional standards
- organise design work to communicate with methods of digital fabrication technology
- 3D Parametric solid modelling using 3D software to create design forms
- Details of 3D digital modelling on the created form using the software application relating to surface creation, material selection, and 3D effects
- Explore and develop created designs through a range of low-fidelity prototypes
- Explore digital modelling techniques and materials in the prototyping phase
- Explore senses experience in the created design, e.g. tactile experience, etc.
- Create the final model based on results from previous exploration phases
The designer's use and application of computer modelling are extended in this subject for the purposes of digital production and manufacture. Parametric Solid modelling software CAD is further used and applied to create form, interface, and instructions for digital fabrication. The required application of technical communication to Australian and international standards is established. Low-fidelity physical modelling techniques studied include object printing, laser engraving and profile shaping. The design potential of different digital fabrication methods is studied by examining iconic designs, human sensory experience, research and creative experimentation.
