Frequently asked questions about education & teaching
How do I choose the right teaching path for me?
It helps to start by identifying your strengths and passions. Do you feel drawn to helping young children learn the foundations of learning? Or does the idea of guiding older students through mastering the more complex aspects of education appeal more? Do you have a specific subject area you’re passionate about and would like to teach?
Taking the time to look inwards and identify your interest areas within education and teaching is not only a great way to narrow down whether primary education, secondary education, or even tertiary education aligns best with your goals, it’s also the key to career longevity.
If you’re still unsure, starting with a broad single subject can be a great way to explore where your interests lie before committing to a specific path.
What are the entry requirements for education & teaching?
Entry requirements for education courses vary depending on the level of study.
The entry requirements for undergraduate teaching courses generally ask for an ATAR, or if you don’t have Year 12, previous VET training or relevant work experience. But through us, there are other pathways you can follow to get into online teaching courses, which we’ll outline below. For postgraduate study, entry requirements typically ask that students have completed an undergraduate degree, either in education or another field.
How can you help me get into a course without entry requirements?
Your dream of becoming a teacher doesn’t have to be brushed off simply because you don’t have the right academic history. Our unique partnership with universities allows us to offer a direct pathway into many online education courses.
Instead of applying to a full teaching degree, you can start by enrolling in 2-4 introductory subjects as a pathway into the course. Once you’ve successfully completed these subjects, you’ll be eligible for entry into the full qualification. We can also help guide you on which subjects to choose depending on your study goals.

How flexible can my studies be?
When you study through us, you have the freedom to:
- start at multiple points during the year, instead of observing the traditional uni calendar
- control your study load by deciding how many subjects to take at once
- study subjects across multiple universities and multiple study areas
And those are only some of the flexible options available. To learn more, visit our study planning page or contact a student advisor.
Are there postgraduate study options for current teachers?
Yes, there are a number of postgraduate study options available for current teachers. Whether you want to specialise in a certain area, move into a leadership role, or enhance your teaching skills by learning new ways to teach, there’s a postgraduate course to help you get there.
Educational Leadership and TESOL are just some of the study options you can choose from, to open doors to new careers or expand your current impact in the classroom.
How much does an education & teaching course cost?
Studying an education or teaching course through Open Universities Australia costs the same as studying on campus with your chosen university. As a not-for-profit, we don’t charge you to use our services.
Your course fees will depend on factors like the level of study, the number of subjects you take, and the university offering the course. To help you plan your study journey, you’ll find an indicative cost on each course page.
If you're eligible, you can use a government HELP loan to cover the cost of your studies—including single subjects—so you can focus on learning now and pay later.
