Sanskrit, the classical language of India, has long been renowned for its beauty, subtlety and complexity. It is the key to the civilizational treasures of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, and provides direct access to a vast repository of literary, scientific and philosophical wisdom. At the ANU we seek to balance the traditional practice of textual reception—reading and grammar—with language production—speaking, chanting and singing—to provide a truly balanced curriculum. In this beginner subject, students will be introduced to the grammar of classical Sanskrit, learn to read easy classical texts and engage in the Living Tradition of Sanskrit conversation, chanting and singing.

Uncover the origins of Sanskrit, India’s classical language. Trace its connections to ancient philosophy and literature. Learn to write the alphabet. Speak a variety of simple phrases, and take part in the Sanskrit tradition of chanting and singing.

The four-year Sanskrit program is designed to introduce students to the broadest possible range of literary genres, including epic, courtly poetry, drama, Upaniṣadic verse and Vedic. In this course students will engage with a selection of readings from Kālidāda’s Meghadūta or a similar text.Via face-to-face video at a set time prescribed by the University. Please be aware of potential time zone differences.

Sanskrit 8 is a high-level reading subject suited to final-year students. This subject introduces students to Vedic Sanskrit, the precursor of Classical Sanskrit, through the investigation of a range of Vedic texts that articulate different developments in the language, thought, and practices of India’s most ancient textual culture. This subject provides students with a foundation in Vedic grammar and exposure to the earliest expression of certain key concepts that have been influential throughout the evolution of South Asian literature and society. Students can expect to acquire skill in the employment of specialist reference materials, familiarity with the distinct text-types encompassed within the Veda, and awareness of modern scholarly approaches to the challenges inherent in interpreting the Veda, its language and worldview.

Sanskrit 8

Sanskrit 7 is a high-level reading course suited to final-year students. This course introduces students to the major compositional genres of Sanskrit scholarly literature that were employed across a diverse range of traditional intellectual disciplines from the Classical to the late-Premodern period in South Asia. This course also introduces students to the Sanskrit commentarial tradition, its practices and conventions, and the influence it exerts upon textual reception. In this course, students will employ advanced grammatical and analytical skills to the interpretation and translation of intellectual texts and commentaries, and will become familiar with the use of commentaries as a translation tool. Students will have the opportunity to compare and consider the relationship between root texts and commentaries from a variety of traditional disciplines – such as poetics, yoga, and grammar – and refine their independent skills and interests in translation.

In Sanskrit 4, students will strengthen their grammar skills and enjoy further readings from the classics of Sanskrit literature.This is a fast paced academic course at a University level.
