Bachelor Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in a discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.This course offers students the opportunity to study one or two disciplines from a wide range of majors. Students choosing only one major will also choose the elective stream where they will be able to choose further units from the same discipline as their chosen major or may choose units from throughout the university. The first year of the course enables students to choose foundation units suitable to their needs and begin study in their chosen major(s), where appropriate.

Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing) (Professional Writing and Publishing)

If you like to express yourself creatively through writing, the Creative Writing degree will help enhance your skills across a range of writing styles, such as fiction, poetry and writing for performance, as well as emerging and experimental genres. You’ll be encouraged to improve your critical awareness and develop all the relevant professional skills required  of an author in the digital age. Each week, you will benefit from the advice and support of our tutors, many of whom are acclaimed authors, and through critical engagement with a talented peer group. Your lecturers and tutors will also advise you on processes that will prepare you to seek publication for your work.   Curtin’s creative writing graduates have had consistent success in national literary awards and publishing. The content of the major creates employment outcomes across a broad range of communications-related fields and will allow you to develop applicable language skills and conceptual understandings that will be useful across a range of other academic disciplines.

Australian Poetry: Storytelling and the Creative Space

This subject examines the role that poetry and storytelling play in the intervention into, and the construction of, Australian cultures. The subject aims to develop students’ awareness of, and participation in, Australian poetry. Students will gain a broad overview of the history of Australian poetry and develop skills in critical and creative thinking and practice, become familiar with terms and concepts used to describe and analyse poetry, learn how to craft their own poems and develop their own poetic voice. Through a process of critical and creative thinking, reflective practice and creative writing, students will develop insights into how we imagine Australian cultures through poetry and storytelling. They will become aware of the possibilities for imagining their own visions of Australia through their poetry and storytelling creative practice, which includes critical listening, critical reading and critical and creative thinking.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Unleash your inner Shakespeare, Wilde or Plath as you put pen to paper. Get to know the concepts and techniques of poetry writing before producing your own prose. Workshop your peers’ work and submerge yourself in the writing process.

This unit investigates the history and practice of one of the most enduring literary genres. It aims to extend students both critically and creatively so that they can read, write, discuss or teach poetry with confidence and better understand its continuing evolution today. Students will study the histories and types of poetic excellence through ancient texts and their present-day equivalents. We will consider how we read, write and teach poetry in ways that borrow from the insights of the past while using the tools of the twenty-first century, such as YouTube, Instagram and Twitter. We will analyse the rise of &#39;Instagram Poets&#39; such as Rupi Kaur to better understand how they reach thousands of followers in a cybernetic reinvention of poetic fame and the transmission of poetry. Students will gain an enhanced understanding of the traditions and techniques of English-language poetry, learn to experiment with poetry and receive supportive feedback from published poets and poetry scholars to improve their creative &#39;eye&#39; and &#39;ear&#39;, as well as their own editing skills.

Following Poetry from Epic to Instagram

In this subject you will explore a range of poetic styles and approaches. With an emphasis on creative writing that is informed by the discovery and critical reading of poetry, writers will examine and write poetry from various historical and contemporary traditions. These will include such forms as free verse, sestinas and rhyming couplets, through to narrative prose poems and dramatic monologues.
From this subject you will gain a broad understanding of poetry&#39;s history and evolution, with the primary focus of compiling a portfolio of poetic works within these traditions. An emphasis will be placed on weekly writing exercises and weekly discussion of wide reading throughout the Study Period, with the ultimate goal to begin to develop their individualised poetic voice.

Explore the broad church of writing styles that make up the poetic form. Get swept up by sonnets, free verse, rhyming couplets and narrative prose poems. Analyse the role of language and expression. Find out about the poetry publishing industry.

In this unit students develop their writing across one or more genres including poetry. The unit encourages students to experiment with new approaches to craft and technique, with particular attention to language. Close reading skills are developed, and reflect upon and interrogate their writing processes, explore new methods in relation to craft and technique or genre. Students undertake close reading and analysis of published creative works and contemporary narrative and poetry studies. Writing workshops and discussion of the readings are structured so that students can make productive links between concepts in narrative studies and their own writing. At the outcome of the unit, students will have produced major and minor works of creative writing and extended their skills in practical analysis of narrative and poetry.

Word Essentials: Prose and Poetry

This unit focuses on developing skills in the production and publication of poetry and short stories. Students explore and analyse creative writing journals that publish poetry and short stories before conceptualising and creating their own work to submit for publication in Macquarie University’s online creative writing journal, The Quarry. Students learn about the publication process, including structural editing, copyediting, proofreading, approaching publishers, the acquisitions and rights process for authors, and producing an online journal.

Wield the essential elements of narrative and structure as you continue to develop your writing practice. Workshop your creative concepts. Uncover new possibilities in the contemporary writing form. Produce a piece of creative writing for peer review.
