The Human Rights degree is designed to promote a critical understanding of the human rights discourse. The degree covers modern human rights institutions and how these work for state and non-state actors. Master of Human Rights

This degree is an entry pathway to the Master of Human Rights for those who do not have a relevant degree. It is for human rights workers, those who would hope to work in the human rights field, professionals who wish to apply human rights principles to their practice, development workers, non government organisation workers, activists, teachers, mediation and conflict workers, and community workers. It involves the study of the theory and philosophy of human rights across different cultural, religious, philosophical and political traditions, and how these ideas can be translated into practice in the contemporary world. This degree is for those working both in Australia and internationally. It is multidisciplinary, and provides an opportunity for those from different cultural backgrounds, professions and disciplines to dialogue about human rights and develop their ideas and skills in human rights practice.This degree is only available for part-time study and the minimum completion time is 1 year.

Introduction to Logic

Logic aims to uncover the most general patterns of good reasoning, so as to improve the way we draw inferences and even allow us to automate parts of that process. It is fundamental to the study of philosophy, mathematics, and computer science, and it has strong connections with many disciplines including law, psychology, and linguistics. Reasoning also occurs everywhere, from the privacy of one&#39;s own mind to political and scientific debates in the public domain, and all good reasoning is implicitly governed by logical principles. Developing an explicit grasp of those principles then is an important transferrable skill, as that understanding can help one to spot when arguments have gone awry and how to get them back on track. This subject will provide a gentle introduction to some of the basic elements of deductive logic, including the formalisation of arguments, propositional and predicate logic, and an accessible method of proof known as &quot;semantic tableaux&quot;. It will also touch on a number of more discipline-specific topics. This is a level 3 subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

This subject focuses on ethical and philosophical issues that arise in the biological sciences, including the medical and health sciences, and the technologies they employ. Scientific disciplines, the biosciences are committed to objectivity and neutrality, but also interact with categories that are socially coded such as race, gender, and disability. Concepts such as health and disease can be understood as natural, biomedical concepts, but also as evaluative concepts that play social roles; and biological conceptions of intelligence, mental illness or disability can be even more contentious. Further, technological advances give us new ways to change human beings, some of which are seen as improvements or enhancements. In examining a series of topics, including race science, eugenics, intelligence, disease, disability, and bioenhancement, you will learn how to critically examine the role of social processes and values in the biosciences, and of the biosciences in society.This is a level 3 subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Biosciences Technology and Society

Focusing on major themes in the intellectual development of the Western world, from Greek metaphysics and ethics, through Christian theology to Modern (17-19 century) scientific, political, ecological or aesthetic understandings of our place and responsibilities in the wider world, we will investigate ideas that continue to inform and guide much contemporary thinking on the social, economic, or environmental challenges of our times, such as, living well, happiness, justice, freedom, knowledge and the power to produce change in the world. We will consider differences in approach, including competing empiricist, rationalist or idealist assumptions that underpin our knowledge claims, as well as the choices that these differences enable and their consequent impact on the public good now and in the future. We will ask: how might an appreciation of the historical emergence of such ideas assist us in reflecting on our responsibilities in relation to the demands of our times?This is a level 2 subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Making of the Modern Western World View

Ethics concerns questions of how we should live, what is good in life, how we can tell right from wrong, or what we owe to each other. This subject will examine traditional and emerging ethical theories, and a range of applied ethical questions. Ethical theories to be examined will include consequentialism, deontology, virtue ethics and care ethics. Students will gain an understanding of these theoretical approaches and their main critiques, as well as links to moral concepts such as moral status, human rights, dignity, and autonomy. We will also apply the theories and concepts in different contexts by examining issues in applied ethics, drawing a selection of controversial topics from a number of areas. These may concern questions of life and death, such as abortion and euthanasia; ethical issues raised by new technologies, such as those relating to social media use, robotics, or artificial intelligence; and global issues, such as the international trade in organs and body parts, global poverty, and the ethics of climate change policy. This is a level 2 subject. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Ethics

In this subject you will be introduced to topics in a range of the major philosophical areas, including epistemology (what can we know?), metaphysics (what is the nature of reality?), ethics, and political philosophy. We will examine some of the central questions that have captivated philosophers throughout millennia, as well as those that scientific advances and cultural changes have only recently brought to our attention. These might include: What is it to be a person, or a citizen? What makes your actions right or wrong? Could a machine think or be conscious? Is it morally acceptable to eat meat, or to design children genetically? Are we defined by our sexuality? What are the proper limits and functions of government or the state? Is there a rational basis for belief in the existence of God? Questions That Matter will focus on exploring the various answers to such questions, and the merits of arguments for views about them.This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Psychological studies have repeatedly shown that our thinking can be biased, distorted, and misinformed. This subject introduces you to some of the most common mistakes that people make in reasoning and equips you with essential tools to recognise and sidestep these errors. Among other things, you&#39;ll master the use of argument diagrams and basic logical principles to dissect and assess arguments as they occur in everyday life.Throughout this subject, you will improve your ability to think with clarity and autonomy, and to participate constructively in discussions and debates. Though critical to the practise of philosophy, these competencies are also vital across all disciplines in academia and are highly sought after in numerous professional fields. Consequently, students often report that the skills they acquire in this course prove to be of extraordinary benefit, regardless of their future career paths.This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

In this subject pre-service teachers will examine childhood in the contexts of a contemporary and changing world. Pre-service teachers engage with historical and contemporary philosophies of early childhood education and care. They will examine the impact of past and current policies and practices and will critically engage with current research and theoretical perspectives informing multiple understandings of children and childhoods. Through engagement with broad range of perspectives, pre-service teachers will be provided with the opportunity to challenge universal representations of child and childhood, to engage with concepts of the multiplicity of childhood and diversity of children&#39;s lived experiences, child agency and children as competent and capable learners and members of a community. A range of contemporary issues and social contexts impacting on children&#39;s learning are examined in relation to diversity and inclusivity, including social, cultural, and religious background, gender, indigeneity, ethnicity, rurality, learning styles and needs.
