This subject was previously known as The Rise and Fall of the West.The world of nation-states today still wrestles with the legacy of imperialism and colonialism. Beginning in the late 15th century, a few European states expanded their commercial reach in the Americas and Asia and commenced a political struggle in regions far away from Europe. Gradually, other Western powers joined the race for overseas possessions, until by the late nineteenth century most of the Global South was governed by the West. There were many non-Western empires in the world during these centuries, however, and the resulting conflicts marked the entire course of modern history. This unit explains the encounters between the West and the Rest, and examines empires in Western Europe, Asia, the Americas, and the Middle East. Explore major moments of colonial rebellion. You’ll focus on the reach of Great Britain, Spain and the United States—and the local people’s reaction spanning upheavals to guerrilla warfare. Delve into significant historical turns in imperialism.

English literature is foundational to modern life, providing everyday cultural references and a storehouse of stories that entertain us and enrich our communication and interaction with each other. This entry unit is informed by the questions: What is literature for? Why is it necessary? Why is it useful? Running through our program is the idea that literature helps us conceive of what it means to be human, and to apprehend the lived experience of other humans.  This unit surveys English literature from its medieval beginnings, through the Shakespearean Renaissance, to the late nineteenth century, when the Modernist movement began to supplant the Decadence of the late Victorian era, and children’s literature began to proliferate, contributing to our modern idea of what it means to be a child. Students will read a wide variety of literature and will be introduced to a range of concepts and tools for studying these texts. Along with a chronological knowledge of literary movements, this unit develops skills at university level in critical reading, textual analysis and writing about literary texts. Short literary works and weekly critical studies provide focal points for developing detailed and informed ways of interpreting different kinds of narratives. This unit will also provide students with an introduction to further studies in English and creative writing at Macquarie.

The food you eat is not just a matter of taste. It is the product of histories of imperialism, global trade and commerce, and industrial and scientific revolutions; it tells a story of cultural change and exchange. In this subject, we study global histories of food from the age of empires to the modern world. We will trace commodity chains for products such as chocolate and tea from agricultural production, through industrial manufacture, to retail, marketing and consumption. Along the way we will explore topics including slavery, Indigenous and ethnic food encounters, kitchens and modernity, adulterated food, and wartime food supplies. Through investigating political, legal, economic and cultural histories of food in global and local contexts, you will discover and debate key concepts including gender, class, race and power. You will bring historical understanding to the urgent question of food sustainability.This is a Level 1 subject. This subject includes live sessions in the form of either in-person or Zoom tutorials with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

This unit introduces students to a variety of social, political, cultural and conflict histories and explores how the global history of the past three hundred years has shaped the contemporary world. The unit explores historical problems from the European, Trans-Atlantic, and Asian worlds. Study modern world history. As you gaze back at the last 300 years, you’ll explore sources and scholarly practices in history. Spanning Europe, the Trans-Atlantic, and Asia, you’ll discover how things were and how they’ve influenced today.

Introduces students to foundational skills and concepts in the study of modern history from the late eighteenth century. Students will traverse the world from 1789 to 2001 looking closely at the role of revolution and the emergence of the nation-state, as well as the cost to humans and the natural world of economic growth and colonisation. Beginning with the French Revolution, the unit investigates conflict and change in the quest for equality and citizenship, telling the story of democratic aspirations in the modern world, including competing visions of modernity. It considers those excluded along with the new forms of solidarity and enmity created against the backdrop of rapid industrialisation, capitalism and environmental change. Students will build a foundational chronology of the modern world and develop skills such as critical and analytical thinking, effective communication and empathy.

This subject introduces you to a variety of events and issues which have influenced the lives of Australians during the 20th and into the 21st centuries, as well as the continuing historiographical debates which surround them. It also introduces you to the variety of sources and methods used to study modern Australian history. Through case studies and detailed source analysis, you will learn about a range of topics including the modern family, Australians at war, immigration, political life, leisure and pleasure, depressions and recessions, and popular culture. This subject complements the knowledge gained in HIST150 but can also be studied as a standalone subject.

Modern Australia

This subject will deepen your understanding of the history of Europe from the start of the Reformation in 1517 to the French Revolution in 1789. In this period, Europe underwent profound transformations. The hegemony of the Catholic Church was challenged by the Protestant Reformation, which tore Europe apart as great dynasties and proto-nations fought for religious and political supremacy. European colonial empires were established in the Americas, Africa and Asia, revolutionising the world economy. Finally, the Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution decisively altered the intellectual landscape of the Western World. Europe as we know it today was moulded by the momentous events of this period. The subject will challenge you to think critically about a range of key events and issues during this fascinating historical period. This subject complements the knowledge gained in HIST111 but can also be studied as a standalone subject.

Early Modern Europe: From Reformation to Revolution

This subject provides an informative and fun introduction to the cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome and where they turn up in the modern world, from Medusa in the Percy Jackson franchise, through to Melbourne’s own version of the Colosseum, the MCG. You will explore the fascinating worlds of Greece and Rome, including the places where their histories, societies and languages have influenced our own culture. You will learn about the worlds of Circe and Socrates, Caesar and Cicero; and discover what we have taken from ancient political structures (&#39;democracy&#39;, &#39;senate&#39;, &#39;fascism&#39;), sport (the Olympics; gladiators), language, philosophy, law, science, medicine, mythology and more.This is a level 1 subject.

The twenty-first century is already being called the Asian Century. What were the countries and peoples we call Asia like 100 years ago, at the start of the twentieth century? How did they change across the century? And how did this process influence their current prosperity and sense of national identity? The subject will survey the major social, political and cultural changes of the past 100 years of so, including European colonisation, the impact of the expansion of Japan and the Second World War, the rise of Asian nationalisms and the wars of independence, consolidation of national political regimes, economic development and modernisation, the rapid recent rise of China and India.This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
