Undergraduate Certificate in Secondary Teaching Education Studies

The Bachelor of Education qualifies you to be a teacher in Australia, and many countries overseas. Our evidence-based course draws on the Faculty of Education’s leadership and research in teacher education that is responsive to local and global contexts. Graduates will be qualified as a teacher in one of the following five areas:<ul><li>Early Childhood/Primary (6 weeks to Year 6);</li><li>Primary (Kindergarten/Prep to Year 6); English Primary Specialisation and specialisation in Science and Maths available; </li><li>Primary/Secondary (English Primary Specialisation and one Secondary specialisation);</li><li>Secondary (Two teaching specialisations); OR</li><li>Secondary: Design and Technology (choose from Industrial Technology, or Food and Fibre, plus one Secondary specialisation).</li></ul>The first year of the course provides a distinctive foundation with excellent grounding in literacy, numeracy, and subject content, as well as issues in contemporary education. Within the four-year full-time equivalent degree (or 3.5 years fast tracked*), you also undertake core learning in Indigenous education, sustainability, inclusive (special) education, along with curriculum and pedagogy learning across disciplines.All primary and secondary students across Australia need to successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) prior to undertaking the second professional experience placement.If undertaking full-time study from year 2, studying from January to December (6 teaching terms) may be required in some years.Please note admission to this course includes non-academic requirements.*Depending on course and specialisation pathway and term commencement.

Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of 21st century learners. Students will have four opportunities to engage in professional practice in schools, culminating in a final professional placement of a block one full school term.The Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education) will be chosen by those who wish to teach in Secondary schools in Years 7 - 12. Students in this degree will specialise in one Secondary school curriculum area and will be qualified to teach Years 7 to 12 in this major teaching area.Please Note: The teaching areas offered in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education) are: The Arts (Visual Arts), English and Humanities and Social Sciences (Geography).Applicants for admission will be required to choose their major teaching area from those offered.Note: This course is only available to applicants who are residing in Australia for the duration of their degree. Literary Chinese 1

This course focuses on the analysis and translation of intermediate texts from various periods. Based on the knowledge acquired in Literary Chinese 1, the course attempts to improve the students’ proficiency in philological translation with a sample of different types of text. To meet the challenges posed by the selected texts, the course further introduces Sinological reference tools useful for their elucidation.

Literary Chinese 2

Literary Chinese is a written language that matured long before the Qin dynasty (221-206 B.C.), when China first became an empire. It continued to be used by China&#39;s governing and elite cultures for nearly three millennia. A command of Literary Chinese is therefore indispensable for the study of any aspect of Chinese literature, thought, history, politics, or society before the twentieth century.The idioms, syntax, style, and allusions of Literary Chinese continue to pervade the modern language. Its enduring influence results from the fact that the great legacies of Chinese culture, right down to the present day, have been largely preserved in this medium. Contemporary Chinese political and social discourse, and education, places increasing emphasis on knowledge of pre-modern Chinese culture and on familiarity with texts written in Literary Chinese. So without a grounding in Literary Chinese, it is impossible to gain a full understanding of the language or content of newspaper articles, literary works, and scholarly prose written in contemporary Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the People&#39;s Republic of China. It has also shaped the linguistic and cultural traditions of Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.This course focuses on the analysis and translation of a selection of texts for beginners from the pre-Qin (before 221 BC) and Han (206 BC to 220 AD) periods. Students develop an understanding of the main grammatical forms, function words, and sentence patterns of this formative period of Literary Chinese. Students will also study techniques of translation, as well as the cultural backgrounds essential to understanding the texts at hand.
