In this continuing beginner level language subject, you will focus on the four key elements of Japanese -reading, writing, listening and speaking. Building on the knowledge gained in JPN1001, this unit brings the total number of kanji learnt to approximately 90. You will will deepen your understanding of Japanese language and culture, and Japan&#39;s place in the world. Culture is embedded throughout language, so learning another language develops your intercultural communication skills, preparing you to be responsive and agile in varied situations.This is a studyflex subject, offered for both face-to-face and online students. The lecture is delivered online, live, and recorded and uploaded to LMS. Face-to-face students attend tutorials on campus, while online students attend live, online tutorials that are not recorded.

Japanese 2

Japan is well known in Australia for its delicious cuisine, powder snow, fantastic hospitality and amazing tourism. In this subject, we dive deeper to understand contemporary Japanese society by exploring some of the social and political issues that characterise today’s Japan. Topics include social inequality, education, gender issues, religion, politics and peace. This subject is conducted entirely in English and the reading material is in English. After the two-week delivery, students are given an extra fortnight to write their essay. You will come away with a sophisticated understanding of contemporary Japan.This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

This subject introduces students to an advanced level of Japanese, which is equivalent to N2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Students learn to discuss a wide range of topics as well as substantially increase their knowledge of vocabulary and kanji. This subject develops high level of competence that enables advanced students to communicate with explicit knowledge of Japanese society and culture. Topics include current socio-cultural issues such as the decrease in the number of children, unsolved mysteries, and education problems. These skills would be demonstrated by application of complex vocabulary and grammatical techniques. This subject strengthens students’ ability to engage in authentic communication in formal settings such as interviews for job hunting. Students gain real life experience in writing job applications. Tutorials include comprehensive practice in using honorifics. Advanced Japanese: Language Variation

This unit develops interactive skills to enable communication and conversation in Japanese. It introduces grammar, vocabulary and kanji which are equivalent to level N3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Students discuss a wide range of topics such as Japanese ambiguity and indirectness. This unit also focuses on strengthening students’ skills in intercultural communication. Advanced Japanese: Intercultural Communication

This subject has an emphasis on the interactive use of the Japanese language and is aimed at increasing student communicative competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing. It provides students with opportunities to establish essential skills with a focus on practical, everyday use of the Japanese language.
