French Cinema

In today’s global economy, the ability to communicate in more than one language is essential. Not only is French widely used as a working language in business environments making it a career asset, it is also the language of many great works of film and literature. If you have little or no knowledge of French, this subject will help you develop the ability to communicate in the French speaking world and enhance your appreciation of French culture; music, film, theatre. You will learn how to read, understand, write and speak an elementary level of French. By the end of the unit you will be acquainted with basic grammatical structures. This subject also introduces you to many elements of French life and Francophone culture.

Building upon your knowledge from FREN301, this subject will further enhance your confidence in your French language skills. You will develop your competence in reading, writing, understanding and speaking French at an advanced level.  After studying this subject you will be able to demonstrate an advanced level comprehension of authentic texts in French.  The study of French sources such as literary texts or films will further promote both your language acquisition and your cultural knowledge.  You will gain a critical insight into the historical and socio-cultural context in which the texts under analysis were produced.  Pursue your goal of becoming a confident communicator in a second language and future proof your career in a global economy where over 275 million people speak French.

French Language 3B

Building upon your knowledge from FREN202, this subject will further enhance your confidence in your French language skills. You will develop your competence in reading, writing, understanding and speaking French at an upper-intermediate to advanced level.  In this subject you will study advanced grammar and expression, as well as authentic French texts, such as literature and films, to contextualise this language acquisition. You will also gain a critical insight into the historical and socio-cultural context in which  the texts were produced.  Pursue your goal of becoming a confident communicator in a second language and future proof your career in a global economy where over 275 million people speak French.

French Language 3A

French cinema is one of the most historically and culturally significant national cinemas in the world. Beginning with the early silent period of the late 19th century, which marks the origins of cinema as it is known today, in this subject you will survey influential movements in French cinema. This will include the experimental films of the Surrealists and the Nouvelle Vague, the stylistic concerns of Cinema du Look, nostalgia in Heritage cinema, attempts to create a &#39;national memory&#39; in Post-colonial films and recent French contributions to Transnational cinema. Throughout the subject, you will develop a foundational understanding of French film theory and criticism, together with background information on the socio-political context of film production in France. All prescribed films will be in French (with English subtitles), exposing you to the nature, structures, sounds, and forms of an ever-evolving French language, as well as the development and changes in cinematic styles, language, and visual culture in their social and cultural contexts. The subject will be taught in English and all students with an interest in film are encouraged to enrol, not just those who are majoring in French.

Explore the language and culture of France through the lens of this important national cinema. Get critical about techniques and themes. See significant movements in French society depicted on screen, including Nouvelle Vague and New Realism. 

Contemporary French culture is rich and diverse, and exposure to its literature, film, media and music will not only broaden your cultural knowledge but also improve your comprehension and expression skills in French. In this subject you will study a range of written, aural and visual contemporary French works and will gain an understanding of some of the social, cultural and economic factors which shape metropolitan France today. The studied works have been selected to increase your exposure to the French language at an accessible level, and the weekly tasks, lectures and tutorials have been carefully designed to help you hone your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This subject will enhance your understanding of French culture.

French Through Contemporary Culture

Building upon FREN201, FREN202 will further enhance your confidence in your French speaking skills. In this subject, you will develop your conversational skills on a number of topics about French and Francophone culture.  You will progress to a point where your French communication skills will equip you for advanced level study of the language and its film and literature.  Pursue your goal of becoming a confident communicator in a second language and future proof your career in a global economy where over 275 million people speak French.

French Language 2B

When you learn French you are learning more than just a language. It opens a window to a whole new world of culture. French also enhances your career options as it is one of the world’s most used languages. Extend your knowledge of French language with this subject which follows on from French 101 and French 102. (This subject is also an entry point if you have studied French at HSC level and achieved 70%+ or those with equivalent prior knowledge). FREN201 will focus on consolidation of grammar and development of communication skills, particularly reading and writing, at an intermediate level. Greatly expanding your vocabulary, you will increase your ability to read and write in French on a number of topics and enhance your appreciation of French and Francophone culture. French Language 2A

Continue your journey with French in this unit designed for those who have completed FREN101. You will consolidate your prior knowledge, and your knowledge of French grammar structures, vocabulary and syntax will be extended. Your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in everyday French language will be further developed to the upper elementary range. You will be able to communicate in French in some depth on selected topics of everyday life. Studying this subject will further enhance your appreciation of French and Francophone culture, giving you insights into French cultural norms and society.
