Future proof your career by further developing your Chinese language skills. In this language proficiency subject you will continue the progression from the 200-level subjects in Chinese language. By the time you reach this level, your grounding in all the major grammatical patterns of Modern Standard Chinese is completed; enabling speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese to be developed to a more sophisticated level. Coverage of topical themes from an intercultural perspective will extend your insights into comparative cultural values and attitudes as expressed through language. By the end of this subject you should be able to recognise 1000 words in Chinese characters.

Chinese Language 3A

The art of Chinese calligraphy is highly respected. This subject is open to students learning Chinese, to those of Chinese heritage, and also to those who have no knowledge of the language but are attracted to Chinese calligraphy. Learning calligraphy is especially useful for you if you are a student of Chinese language and culture. You will learn more about the structure of the language and the way that Chinese language speakers think when you understand the fundamentals that underpin the order of their brush strokes. Lectures cover materials, basic brush skills, styles, and the history of Chinese calligraphy. The subject culminates in an exhibition of your work.

Chinese Calligraphy

This subject follows on from the first trimester 200-level unit in Chinese, and is designed to complete your basic grounding in Modern Standard Chinese. Your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese will be further developed, as will your skills and strategies as a language learner. Attention will be given both to the structures and patterns of the language, as well as to its socio-cultural context, and various aspects of Chinese culture, customs and society are introduced through studying spoken and written language texts.

This subject is designed to build on previously established foundations of Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin). Your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese will be developed, as will your skills and strategies as a language learner. Attention is given both to the structures and patterns of the language, and also to its socio-cultural context, and you will be introduced to various aspects of Chinese culture, customs and society through studying spoken and written language texts.

To future proof your career in a global market, join the 1.4 billion people across the world who know how to speak Mandarin. This subject continues your introduction to Modern Standard Chinese. The topics and situations covered are useful ones related to the practicalities of daily life in China. Your listening and speaking skills will improve, and you will learn to use many further types of simple sentence patterns. You will develop greater confidence in writing and reading Chinese, and significantly extend the number of characters you can recognise and write.

Chinese Language 1B

Across the world, more than 1.4 billion people communicate in Mandarin every day. To future proof your career in a global market, knowledge of this language will hold you in good stead. This subject is designed to provide an introduction to Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin), and how to study this important and fascinatingly distinctive language. From the start you will learn to participate in simple conversations in Chinese. Initially the focus is on pronouncing the sounds and tones of Mandarin accurately, and noting them using the &#39;pinyin&#39; phonetic script. Then you will enter the world of Chinese characters, discovering how they represent meanings, and learning the correct way to write them. The simple principles of word order at the basis of Chinese grammar will be explained and practised. Through learning the language you will discover various significant aspects of Chinese life and culture.

An introduction to Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin). You’ll build a vocabulary of common words and get to know the language’s sounds and tones. Write simple sentences. Enjoy light conversations. Touch on culture, lifestyle, and everyday life in China.

This is an introductory subject for students with little or no prior knowledge of Chinese. This introductory subject is for anyone who is interested in the Chinese language and/or has the need to learn Chinese for business or academic purposes. This subject provides an introduction to all four basic language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. It provides students with opportunities to establish essential communicative skills with a focus on practical, everyday use of the Chinese language and incorporating some socio-cultural knowledge. Selected topics and situations, such as exchanging personal information, asking about directions and telling your hobbies etc., all come from real life scenarios. There is no prerequisite required for this introductory subject.

This subject is designed to further promote an understanding of cultural etiquettes and social behaviours in Chinese culture. The subject develops students&#39; language skills through close reading of non-authentic and authentic texts in Chinese language. These skills would be demonstrated by application of complex vocabulary and grammatical techniques. The emphasis is on language register and language variations when expressing different opinions and dealing with more complex social situations.
