The Undergraduate Certificate in Agriculture is your opportunity to learn how to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges in food production and sustainable farming – all while building a career in a fast-growing industry.You’ll learn about historical developments of the agricultural and horticultural industries in Tasmania and Australia, as well as learn about current and future opportunities predicted for the industry. You’ll be introduced to key concepts in food and fibre production, such as supply chains, value chains, value adding, and quality assessment, and explore the challenges of pests, weeds, and diseases in primary production, including the impact on productivity, profit and market access. You’ll also learn about Tasmanian animal production systems and explore a variety of strategies that growers use to meet their production targets.As part of this program, you’ll have the opportunity to attend excursions to Tasmanian commercial animal production enterprises, as well as hear from guest speakers in your practical tutorial sessions. This program also provides an opportunity for you to attend a 3.5 day field trip to the north-west of the state during the mid-semester break.

Value Chain Management in Agribusiness

This unit will compare and contrast a range of physiological processes in microbes, plants and animals. It will highlight common features and their evolutionary origins, with particular reference to prokaryotic genes which have been conserved in multicellular organisms. Topics to be explored include metabolism (e.g. respiration, photosynthesis and transport), environmental responses (e.g. abiotic stress response, immune reactions, behaviour), and phenology (e.g. sexual maturation, fertilisation, life cycles). The unit will draw the common threads of evolution together in complex multicellular organisms, as well as contrasting those processes unique to each Kingdom, such as photosynthesis and locomotion.

Life Processes

This unit is suitable for all students interested in behaviour. It covers a range of topics relevant to today&#39;s society in a manner accessible to all students. Basic mechanisms are covered, together with function and evolution. Lecture topics include explanations of behaviour, evolution, evolutionary origins of behaviour, basic neuroscience, perception, learning, brain and behaviour, and topics in animal behaviour. Lectures culminate with some reflections on the lives of humans in our modern world and the role of culture in human evolution.

Biological Basis of Behaviour

This unit explores the evolution of our species, what makes humans distinct, and how we have developed the biological, cultural and technological diversity we now see around us. The unit examines new research, highlighting the most recent discoveries and theoretical breakthroughs, encouraging students to learn more about the major debates, key discoveries, and important theories in the study of human evolution. Specifically, the unit provides students with a background in evolutionary theory, genetics, anthropology, paleoarchaeology, and comparative primatology in order to address a number of topics: the development of the human brain; bipedalism; language; families; social life; sexuality; reproduction; hunting; diet; art; stone tools and technology; language; domesticated plants and animals; cities; and the first civilisations. The unit also demonstrates how an evolutionary perspective offers new insights into modern human diversity, including both cultural and biological differences among us. The unit does not require a background in the biological or evolutionary sciences. It provides an excellent foundation for understanding and evaluating important contemporary issues.

Human Evolution and Diversity

This subject addresses the application of financial management and risk management principles to the decision making of firms operating in the agribusiness environment. In this subject, you will be introduced to the procedures used in the evaluation and analysis of the financial operations of these firms. Further, you will examine and analyse different business structures, undertake an analysis of the issues related to capital structure, and will understand the effect that funding sources have in terms of a firms cost of capital. You will further develop your understanding of the importance of the time value of money concept, particularly as it relates to the strategic decision making process of agribusiness firms. Finally, you will spend time examining the range of risks agribusinesses confront and will develop an understanding of the risk mitigation techniques and project evaluation methods utilised by these firms in the management of these risks.

Agrifinance and Risk Management

Human and animal relations are basic to society; across all walks of life and in all cultures humans and animals have formed diverse and enduring relationships, and animals have long been used to tell us about what it means to be human. This subject will explore historical, cross cultural and contemporary anthropological perspectives on human and animal relations in small scale societies, in agriculture, in industrialised societies and in leisure culture. In doing so, it will investigate themes such as totemism, animal utility, animal companionship, endangered animals, the human/animal divide and post-humanism.This is a level 2 subject.

Humans and Animals: Anthropological Perspectives

Water Management explores the role of water in the context of agribusiness decision-making. It draws on environmental and agribusiness industry expertise to explore key concepts underpinning water management in Australia, including fundamental hydrological, environmental and economic factors impacting sustainable management of water resources; the historic alignment of the development water resources and regional prosperity; and the current institutional and operational frameworks that influence water management decisions.
