History provides the foundations for interpreting the past and understanding how the past has been reconstructed and debated. As a discipline that intersects across the humanities and social sciences, History will enable you to develop skills in research, critical analysis and methodology, persuasive argument, and communication and written expression. At UniSQ you will explore evidence from the past and our contemporary times to investigate the origins of fundamental issues relevant to us today – race relations, slavery, revolutions, nationalism, women’s experience, culture and ethnicity, social movements, globalisation, politics, war and genocide, and historiography.

Bachelor of Arts (History)

The Undergraduate Certificate in Art History is designed for people who are interested in pursuing a career in Art History. The Undergraduate Certificate may give students entry (and credit for the four units completed) for the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) among others at Curtin.

Undergraduate Certificate in Art History

The Diploma of Family History will give you essential knowledge and tools to bring the past to life through tracing your family experiences and understanding the historical forces that shaped them.Taught by leading scholars in family history, and specialists in Australian, European and Asian histories, this practical program will assist you in exploring your family’s past and enable you to become more proficient and comfortable in a digital environment.The Diploma teaches core skills in contemporary family history to research your ancestors and others, including planning and conducting online research, locating and managing historical data, and writing compelling family histories.You&#39;ll learn how to use oral history, family heirlooms and photographs, as well as physical and digital archives to illuminate your family’s past. The Diploma of Family History focuses on understanding individual lives in their wider historical contexts, through investigating the impacts of events such as war, convict transportation, and migration.

Diploma of Family History

Graduates in the Master of Ancient History (OUA) will have specialised knowledge in this discipline and skills for research and further learning. In this course, you will have the opportunity to gain advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in a range of relevant disciplines. In addition to the coursework offered through seminars, you will conduct research in your chosen field. You may only enrol in the course as an online student. The course caters for anyone who wishes to further their studies in Ancient History, support specific professional development (eg teachers), or prepare for higher degree research studies.

Master of Ancient History

Please refer to the <a href="https://www.open.edu.au/your-studies/getting-started/key-dates" target="_blank">Key Dates </a>page for further information.The course will provide pathways for you, to further studies in Ancient History, support specific professional development needs (eg for teachers) or preparing you for entry into the Master of Ancient History in an online mode.You will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of a complex body of knowledge in a range of the disciplines offered: Ancient Greece, Rome, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Israel, Early Christianity, Coptic Studies, and Ancient Languages.In addition to the coursework offered through a program of online seminars, you may conduct research in your chosen field.From 2020 the Macquarie subject codes have changed. All subjects previously studied under the old subject code will be recognized as equivalent.

Ancient Greek A

The Agora to Hogwarts: Greek and Roman Culture in the Modern World

This unit aims to help students develop the skills necessary to read original texts in Ancient Greek. Both literary Greek and inscriptions will be studied. No previous language study or knowledge of Ancient Greek is expected. By the end of the unit students should be able to read simple passages in Greek; should have a sound knowledge of the vocabulary of the texts studied; and should have acquired sufficient mastery of their grammar and vocabulary to understand simple texts.

Decode the letters, words and language of the ancient Greeks. Familiarise yourself with grammar and vocabulary rules. Recognise Greek script and phonetic structure. Finish with the knowledge needed to read basic ancient Greek passages.

This subject provides an informative and fun introduction to two of the major cultures of the Ancient Mediterranean world: Ancient Greece and Rome, and looks at where they turn up in the modern world from our own university&#39;s &#39;Agora&#39; to the Latin spells of the Harry Potter series. We explore the fascinating worlds of Greece and Rome, including the places where their histories, societies and languages have influenced our own culture. Students will learn about the worlds of Julius Caesar and Socrates; learn about ancient societies at war and at peace; and discover what we have taken from ancient political structures (&#39;democracy&#39;, &#39;senate&#39;, &#39;fascism&#39;), sport (the Olympics; gladiators), history, law, science, medicine and mythology.This is a level 1 subject and includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
