Bachelor of Construction Management

This program replaces both the Bachelor of Arts (Interior Architecture) and the Bachelor of Applied Science (Interior Architecture).Interior designers, as qualified professionals in Interior Architecture, design quality environments for a diverse range of users and functions. They coordinate the design and construction of building interiors including commercial, workplace, hospitality, medical, gallery, and retail environments. In addition, interior designers may be involved with more transient environments and the associated displays for trade fairs, exhibitions, museums, and public events. Their skills and knowledge are also utilised for adaptive reuse of existing buildings and conservation of significant sites. Interior designers require skills and understanding in all aspects of design, including technical knowledge of interior construction, equipment and building systems. They must also exercise ability in communication and administrative skills. The degree also provides a sound basis for more specialised careers and study in areas such as furniture or set design, education and/or research.In order to complete this program, students are also required to complete at least 80 hours&#39; work experience in the industry before graduation.Once you have been admitted to the program, you will choose a Specialisation (or Minor) in a discipline area complementary to Interior Architecture. You can select from one of the following specialisations:<ul><li>Construction Management - Develop an understanding of the principles and processes surrounding building construction and management, specifically focusing on low and high rise construction, building surveying and construction contracts.</li><li>Planning and Geography - Learn about key concepts and approaches for understanding cities as cultural landscapes, including urban and regional planning principles, governance, social geographies of cities, geographical analysis, and spatial experience at an urban scale.</li><li>Animation and Game Architecture - Learn the fundamentals of animation and game design, such as techniques for 3D modelling and animation, development of creative and compelling visuals, and the use of motion graphics and game related technologies. This specialisation connects closely with architectural presentation techniques and the creation of inspiring built environments.</li><li>Digital Design Specialisation - Ideal for people who are interested in gaining fundamental skills and knowledge in Web and UX Design. This program will examine the relationship between Indigenous concepts of Country, including the impact of colonisation that has impacted on an authenticity to place. Students will gain an understanding of how narratives of the past can articulate a sense of place-creation and place-knowing through exploring storytelling methods across a variety of historical and contemporary mediums. Students will critically analyse contemporary ways of collaborating with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, encompassing organisations and communities. This exploration will offer insights, protocols, and practices for achieving culturally responsive engagement. The program delves into the structures and interactions within these communities, examining roles, responsibilities, and connections to Country. Students will gain an understanding of the inherent values, knowledges, and practices in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, fostering a culturally cohesive approach for positive reconciliation aligned with self-determination processes.Additionally, students will explore Indigenous knowledge systems, gaining insights into the practical, conceptual, and spiritual role of Country. The curriculum examines dimensions of place and space, emphasising the reciprocal relationship between human beings and the environment through Indigenous perspectives. You will explore systems-based design approaches including regenerative design, resilience thinking, permaculture principles and biophilic design that will enable you to better integrate your house within wider living systems and communities. Through innovative, holistic precedent analysis, self-directed field study and structured design exercises, you will devise practical strategies to create, for example, adaptive microclimates around your house, a home-based food system, and conditions for improved backyard biodiversity, while also targeting well-being and bushfire design awareness. With these systems-based perspectives, you will likely see numerous new opportunities for action at home that contribute to ecological restoration and the well-being of your household and community.

Sustainable Design for Houses and Landscapes

This subject was previously known as Sustainable Cities.This subject examines various notions of cities within a sustainability framework. Students will explore urbanisation trends in the context of existing and emerging sustainability challenges by reviewing cities worldwide. In this subject you will develop the knowledge and skills needed to undertake planning for protected area systems. We will explore the frameworks, processes and methods used to identify areas for inclusion in national reserve systems. Students will have the opportunity to apply and compare reserve selection methods using Tasmania as a case study. Topics covered include system purposes and priorities; national reserve planning frameworks; systematic conservation planning; government reserve selection processes; and collaborative and participatory approaches. Students without prior experience in GIS and spatial analysis will be given a basic introduction to these skills. Note, the software taught in this course works best with a Microsoft operating system.

Reserve System Planning

Conservation efforts globally are focussed primarily on biodiversity, but geodiversity elements and features such as soils, rivers, mountains and caves provide humans with a wealth of ecosystem services and enjoyment. In this subject, you will learn about how to recognise geodiversity elements as critical system supports for biodiversity and ecosystem function, and to appreciate their cultural and recreational value for society. Using a series of masterclasses with global experts (in-field, in person or online), you will be immersed in the practices of &#39;geoconservation&#39; and &#39;geotourism&#39;. With no prior knowledge or skills required, you will develop skills as a communicator and conservation professional, and learn how to:- Rank and assess geodiversity elements (as &#39;subjects&#39; of conservation) and features in terms of their rarity, uniqueness, importance to science and society,- Construct inventories of abiotic, biotic and cultural elements and values for recreation and reserve establishment- Undertake in-field degradation assessments of landscapes used by humans for tourism and production- Recommend management strategies to restore landscape features and values for human enjoyment and wilderness protection- Undertake decision-making in a range of modes – graphical, consensus methods, GIS methods and qualitative methods.- Communicate landscape features and conservation strategies to a broad range of audiences.Any student interested in how to undertake conservation practice, curate heritage, assess landscape suitability for tourism and other ventures, or to communicate natural values will find KGA527 useful. Landscape Conservation and Recreation

This subject was previously known as Global Cities and Regions. This subject explores the key concepts and approaches for understanding cities.
