Bachelor of Criminal Justice and Criminology

The Bachelor of Criminology at UNE is an inter-disciplinary degree that draws upon areas of study such as criminology, forensic science, law and criminal justice, and the sociology of deviance. Students are able to specialise in a particular major while still choosing a number of core and additional listed subjects that examine criminal law and procedures, policing, punishment, prisons, forensic science, theories of crime, rural crime and juvenile delinquency. The degree also offers students the opportunity to undertake training in research methods, apply theory to practice and investigate geographical differences and inequities within criminal justice in Australia. The degree provides hands-on experience within the criminal justice system through CRIM312 and also through our WorkReady program. The term social problem is usually taken to refer to social conditions that affect a significant number of people within society in a negative way. Social problems are seen as being disruptive or damaging to society, as social injustices that we should be striving to solve. For example, crime and safety, violence, alcohol, and drug use are often constructed as significant social problems for many people in Australia while others are more concerned with inequality and discrimination. In fact, social problems like crime are often the consequence of factors extending beyond the individual&#39;s control, such as inequality, discrimination, prejudice, oppression, and concomitant social injustice. Sociology provides us with the critical thinking skills to understand the connection between social problems and the social structure including how social problems come to be &#39;problems&#39; in the first place. In this course, you will develop frameworks for critical sociological thought by exploring multiple intersectional axes of power, oppression, inequality, and social injustice including classism, racism and colonialism, sexism, heterosexism and transmisia, ableism, adultism, and ageism. You will learn how oppression and power within these spheres (and the intersections between them) are vital to understanding the social problems of most concern to the discipline of criminology and reflect on how (in)justice might be mitigated. The knowledge gained will equip you with the tools to do criminology in a socially just way.

Psychology of Investigative and Legal Processes

Deviance - the breaching of social judgements or norms - is a universal and ubiquitous phenomenon, fundamental to studies in sociology and criminology. We all make social judgements and we are all judged by others but such judgements are relative and constructed. Different societies, subcultures and even individuals have different views on what is right and wrong; and the kinds of behaviours, beliefs and bodies that are labelled as &#39;deviant&#39; depend upon their historical, social and cultural context. In this subject you will explore the social construction of deviance in relation to gender, sexuality, race, bodies, minds, drug use and violence, and you will learn to use the concept of deviance as a means of critically analysing society.

Deviance

Psychologists have assisted the work of the police in a number of ways and this subject of study introduces applications of psychology to police operations. Topics covered include false confessions and testimony, police interviewing, facial recognition, and eyewitnesses and error. The rise of evidence-based policing has encouraged psychologists to work closely with the police on developing practices that are grounded in empirical research, and this approach will be critically assessed. Police officers frequently experience work related stress and ways in which psychologists can assist officers in responding to stress are also examined. Students will be provided with an overview of the opportunities and limitations of police-psychology collaborations. The need for a pragmatic approach underscores this subject of study.
