Bachelor of Criminology/Bachelor of Psychological Science

The Bachelor of Criminology at UNE is an inter-disciplinary degree that draws upon areas of study such as criminology, forensic science, law and criminal justice, and the sociology of deviance. Students are able to specialise in a particular major while still choosing a number of core and additional listed subjects that examine criminal law and procedures, policing, punishment, prisons, forensic science, theories of crime, rural crime and juvenile delinquency. The degree also offers students the opportunity to undertake training in research methods, apply theory to practice and investigate geographical differences and inequities within criminal justice in Australia. The degree provides hands-on experience within the criminal justice system through CRIM312 and also through our WorkReady program. In every society there are acts or omissions that constitute crimes and it is crucial that we understand the nature and consequences of crime. In this introductory subject you will learn about a range of issues, including the problematic nature of defining crime and the impact of the media when it comes to explaining criminal behaviour. You will explore how knowledge of crime is developed and the role of theory in explaining crime. You will also investigate forensic science and the criminal justice system. You will explore different types of crimes that are impacting upon our society, including crimes against morality; cyber, corporate and white-collar crime; violent and property crime; and youth crime.

Understanding Crime

This is a foundational subject in Criminology. You will focus on criminological approaches to understanding crime and criminalisation. The subject will introduce various categories of crime (e.g. property crime and violent crime) and debates about what counts as crime and harm (e.g. crimes of the powerful versus the less powerful). You will engage not only with research that highlights patterns of crime but also with important critiques about the measurement of crime. The subject invites you to consider the relationships between specific social groups (e.g. young people, women, Indigenous people) and the criminal justice system.

Crime and Society

In this subject you will focus on sociological approaches to crime and the criminal justice system with the objective of understanding research and debates about: (i) the criminal justice system (police, courts, corrections); (ii) patterns of crime (measuring crime victims and offenders, white collar crime, violent crime); (iii) the relationship between specific social groups (young people, women and Indigenous Australians) and the criminal justice system; (iv) responses to crime (crime prevention, victims, alternative dispute resolution).

This foundation unit provides you with an introduction to the organisation, policies, practices and institutions that constitute the Australian Criminal Justice System. Broadly, this unit takes a scholarly and criminological approach towards the Australian Criminal Justice System. You will be investigating the substantial areas of the justice system including policing, court structures, the Rule of Law, the role of the coroner, sentencing and punishment, transnational policing, wrongful convictions, forensic expert witnesses, crime prevention and case studies. The unit is delivered through a combination of traditional and problem-based teaching methods. The unit provides you with a foundation for study in criminology and the social sciences more generally.

The Criminal Justice System

Developing professionally 1 is a core subject designed to assist students to self-reflect on themselves, envisage future career options as well as use this knowledge to develop a plan to best position themselves for employment after graduation. Throughout the subject, students will articulate a vision of themselves and organisations of interest in the criminal justice system. Students will also gain a thorough understanding of who they are, their personal strengths and values and what this means professionally. Lastly, students will be introduced to a step-by-step process for career planning in which they will reflect on themselves, explore career possibilities, and make decisions and set goals as part of a personal development plan to clarify their career pathway and position themselves on the market for employment after graduation. This course takes students through their own personal journey for a professional purpose. Students that have completed CCJ101, as part of their program structure, do not need to complete CCJ102, however if they wish to take this subject it can be added as a free choice elective.Students should not enrol in the subject if they have completed: 2019CCJ, COM15 or CCJ16

Developing Professionally 1

The term social problem is usually taken to refer to social conditions that affect a significant number of people within society in a negative way. Social problems are seen as being disruptive or damaging to society, as social injustices that we should be striving to solve. For example, crime and safety, violence, alcohol, and drug use are often constructed as significant social problems for many people in Australia while others are more concerned with inequality and discrimination. In fact, social problems like crime are often the consequence of factors extending beyond the individual&#39;s control, such as inequality, discrimination, prejudice, oppression, and concomitant social injustice. Sociology provides us with the critical thinking skills to understand the connection between social problems and the social structure including how social problems come to be &#39;problems&#39; in the first place. In this course, you will develop frameworks for critical sociological thought by exploring multiple intersectional axes of power, oppression, inequality, and social injustice including classism, racism and colonialism, sexism, heterosexism and transmisia, ableism, adultism, and ageism. You will learn how oppression and power within these spheres (and the intersections between them) are vital to understanding the social problems of most concern to the discipline of criminology and reflect on how (in)justice might be mitigated. The knowledge gained will equip you with the tools to do criminology in a socially just way.

This course explores the intersections between law and psychology. Examine the role of psychology in criminal justice processes, focusing on policing and the court system. Cover a broad range of topics such as investigative psychology, deception, eyewitness research, expert evidence, and jury and judicial decision making.
