Depending on choice of subjects, you will develop skills in one or more of: creating, maintaining and managing online communications for personal and commercial interactions, as well as gaining knowledge of the social and cultural contexts within which those interactions occur. The approach is interdisciplinary: you develop skills in websites, public communication, social network management, collaboration via virtual organisations, and web media production. At the same time, you will understand the political, economic and social changes associated with the Internet. By taking this course, you will add to your existing qualification a basic level knowledge and skills needed for you to become an astute, engaged professional communicator via the Internet.Fine Art StreamThe Fine Art stream is designed for those seeking to develop an introductory understanding of Fine Art.Professional Writing and Publishing StreamThe Professional Writing and Publishing stream is designed for those seeking to develop an introductory understanding of Professional Writing and Publishing.

Graduate Certificate in Arts

This is a course for students who are new to their chosen major area of study. It is designed to allow students to develop and apply advanced skills and understandings of contemporary practices in their field while developing and extending their critical, analytical, and creative knowledges and experiences through interdisciplinary engagement with allied fields of media, creative arts, and social inquiry. Students will develop specialist practical and professional skills orientated towards professional or creative engagement in fields of their chosen major. They will also gain analytical, collaborative, and problem-solving skills through the critically informed practice of designing, planning, and producing a major project in the form of a creative production, portfolio work, report, or thesis. The course also provides opportunities for students to take internships in their respective fields and to demonstrate qualification for possible entry into Curtin University’s PhD program.The Professional Writing and Publishing (PWP) Major will equip students with the skills, understanding and discipline to work in corporate communications and media in state, federal and local government, business and industry, the not-for-profit sector, arts organisations, and the magazine and book industries. These areas continue to demonstrate a significant growth nationally and internationally. It is expected that the degree will attract students with a strong command of the English language from a range of undergraduate disciplines from not only Humanities but also science and health sciences. Students will learn to convey information, issues and debate to colleagues, clients, constituents, and stake-holders by creating narratives that are rhetorically effective, ethically aware, well-researched, and cogently argued, in a range of media, genres and forms including print and online media, features and profiles, speeches, reports, discussion papers, narrative nonfiction, and promotion writing. Uniquely, the Curtin PWP program integrates creative practice and academic inquiry with training and experience in real-world technical and professional skills and competencies. It aims to foster its students’ narrative nonfiction writing talents, developing their skills in storytelling whilst training them in the specialised genres and conventions of professional communication and delivering advanced instruction in research, writing, editing and publishing. This equips students to contribute to and influence public discourse which is increasingly being driven by narrative: stories that capture an organisation’s identity, aspirations, and endeavours. Students will undertake a major project in their second year of study. They will also have an opportunity to practice their skills and develop their portfolio through internship with a professional organization. Students with outstanding results will have an option to further strengthen their critical capacity in preparation for possible PhD study.

Graduate Workplace Writing

This subject was previously known as Web Media.For at least twenty years, we have seen a trend towards &#39;convergence&#39; in the media, as new social understandings and new business models emerge that break down the distinction between traditional media forms (print and broadcast news, films and games, and so on). We have also seen the development of social or participatory media, without rigid boundaries between consumers, creators and producers. The Internet has played a critical role in these processes, becoming the key frame of reference for discussions of the future of converging and participatory media. In particular, the World Wide Web enables the production, distribution, remixing and remediation of an extraordinary array of digital media content and the linking together of otherwise separate media forms. It considers how writing can accommodate the re-structured reading that comes from scrolling down, rather than turning a page, together with the non-linear flow that results from hyperlinking. In this subject, students engage in practical online writing tasks, while also gaining a clear understanding of how writing has evolved through digital forms of publishing.
