We share a global responsibility for the sustainable provision of food and the consequences of our food choices. The need to eat determines where, how and why we live. Food security (and insecurity) can drive conflict, propels human migration, and informs our relationship with land and environment. With an overarching global perspective, this subject explores food production and consumption, exploring its sociological, political, historical, economic, ethical, and scientific contexts.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Food Security

Australia’s democracy is among the oldest and most stable in the world. Yet the Australian political system is not without its critics or without its challenges. In this subject, students examine the ideas, events, actors and institutions that have shaped the design and operation of the Australian political system. Australian Politics and Government

This subject introduces students to key ideas, theories and debates relating to domestic and global political institutions and processes and their broader intersection. It then examines how these ideas, theories and debates shape major contemporary political and policy questions such as: inequality and injustice; gender and class; security and human rights; violence and peace; capital flows; people flows; imperialism, globalisation and the Global North/South divide; and climate change.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. This subject was previously known as POL237 Terrorism and Political Violence in South Asia.This subject aims to develop a critical understanding of the nature of political and security challenges confronting the South Asian region and how these challenges impact upon global security; the relationship between politics, security and terrorism in South Asia; the appropriate counter-terrorism measures that have been taken by affected states; and the &#39;out-of-the-box&#39; solutions to security problems confronting South Asia. While a regional perspective will be adopted, the unit will place particular emphasis on India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.Murdoch University students should note that POL218 Politics and Security in South Asia is considered academically equivalent and therefore you should not enrol in this subject if you have successfully completed POL218.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Terrorism and Political Violence in South Asia

This unit covers key issues in Middle East politics and security today. The first part addresses regional complexities in terms of people, society, politics and geopolitics. The second part examines nationalism; the emergence of the modern states; the origins of conflict; and debates around political change and reform, including the role of political Islam and the emergence of religious radicalism. The final part considers contemporary challenges: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; ‘war on terror’; Arab Spring; and the emergence of groups such as Daesh/Islamic State.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Middle East Politics and Security

This subject was previously known as Asia-Pacific in the Global System.
Aims to produce a critical understanding of global affairs. This subject&#39;s major assumption is that what we see as comprising &#39;international politics&#39; is not determined exclusively by what is out there, but also by something in our own heads. It is the theories and concepts constructed by International Relations scholars that enable us to make sense of global affairs. Examines various theoretical approaches, including realism, idealism, constructivism, feminism and Marxism. Explores such issues as globalisation, development, environmentalism, and the global economy.
