The aim of this subject is to apply critical perspectives to popular music as a key form of cultural production, consumption and leisure in contemporary everyday life. In doing so the unit will apply a range of sociological concepts and theories ranging from Marxism and cultural Marxism through to more recent post-structuralist approaches including postmodernism, reflexive modernity and risk. The unit will also draw on approaches applied to the study of popular music in corresponding disciplines such as cultural studies and media studies.

Explore how popular music has become an essential part of culture and everyday life. You’ll use sociological theories like postmodernism to understand its significance. Study popular music in depth. Get critical about the impact of music on society.

Understand the changing relationships between media, telecommunications and computing industries, while investigating the practices of electronic publishing. Issues in Contemporary Communication

This unit introduces you to the ways in which audiences have been defined, researched and theorised. Particular emphasis is placed on competing conceptualisations, methodologies and outcomes of audience research. Subject content and assessment will assist you in developing skills in constructing and evaluating quantitative and qualitative audience research.

Media Audiences

Understanding the media landscape that permeates our lives is crucial for any communication practitioner. This subject enables you to explore media relations strategies at an advanced level both in the critical context of mass media theory and as a practical management technique in various business, political and community settings. The course equips you with the skills necessary to function in a professional media relations role in an ever-changing environment. You will develop an understanding of the critical relationship between the public relations practitioner and the media, while gaining insights into the different needs and expectations of traditional and social media outlets and platforms.A range of assessments and tutorial activities will enable you to design media releases and a video story, create an online media centre, as well as understand the theories that support these communication approaches and skills. You will also engage in discussion and debate with your online peers and tutor.

LHS258 meets the challenges of the changing media landscape where innovation and entrepreneurship are crucial to the way in which careers are built. Students engage with mobile communication technologies to work effectively within newsrooms, agencies, and other communication spaces. This course is equivalent to 2508LHS Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship

This subject provides an overview of the publishing industry, its role, personnel, strategies and products. The subject contextualises the history of the industry and its evolution as both a business and commercial enterprise. We will examine the often complex operations of this cultural industry from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Students will develop an understanding of: the history of the industry; contemporary issues facing publishing as a cultural industry; the professional expertise required to develop a text for publication; production and marketing processes; developments in electronic and non-traditional publishing.

Gain an insider’s view on the commercial aspects of the publishing industry. Delve into the history of books. Explain the role of editors, publishers and marketing personnel. Familiarise yourself with copyright law and publishing agreements.

Publishing in the Marketplace

Learn about the different ways that information and news is gathered and reproduced. You will learn about the range of print and electronic media professions that exist in today&#39;s information society and explore global trends and issues arising from the growth of information media. The subject introduces news style, exploring how to gather information and write on a range of key topics across news genres. You will also examine ethical issues faced by journalists and consider such issues in connection to your own stories using the framework of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) Code of Ethics. These issues will be analysed and discussed in essay form.
