This subject examines the role that poetry and storytelling play in the intervention into, and the construction of, Australian cultures. The subject aims to develop students’ awareness of, and participation in, Australian poetry. Students will gain a broad overview of the history of Australian poetry and develop skills in critical and creative thinking and practice, become familiar with terms and concepts used to describe and analyse poetry, learn how to craft their own poems and develop their own poetic voice. Through a process of critical and creative thinking, reflective practice and creative writing, students will develop insights into how we imagine Australian cultures through poetry and storytelling. They will become aware of the possibilities for imagining their own visions of Australia through their poetry and storytelling creative practice, which includes critical listening, critical reading and critical and creative thinking.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Australian Poetry: Storytelling and the Creative Space

This unit introduces students to the critical reading of diverse texts—fiction and non-fiction, poetry and prose, literary and non-literary forms. Students will explore and experiment with a range of writing practices and reflect on the contemporary ethical, practical, and imaginative challenges and possibilities of writing in an ever-evolving digital environment. The unit will guide students in cultivating the habits of crafting, refining and editing their own creative texts, developed with specific genre, purpose, reading context(s) and readership in mind. Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Writing Creatively

NOTE: If you study this subject in Winter, the subject will be a shorter duration (5 weeks) and will require at least 20 hours of study per week.Do you want to become a more confident, compelling and commanding presenter? How can you write and perform to engage, entertain, inform and persuade? This unit equips you with skills to present in public. Presenting in Public: Writing and Performing for Professional Contexts

Working with people often demands sophisticated skills and artfulness and this unit takes seriously the task of coming into a place, listening, learning, and working collaboratively. ART101 is designed to prepare you to “make a difference in the world” in ways that are responsible, creative, and thoughtful. It is designed to support you to continue preparing for life outside of university: in the labour market, in civic life, in families, and as volunteers in initiatives that seek to create sustainable futures for generations that follow.ART101 will support you to prepare for a modern labour market, particularly in industry areas associated with justice, creative work, fairness, cross-cultural dialogue, ecological sustainability, and responsible government, as well as being active citizens, and supporting healthy family relationships and social groups. The learning experiences of this unit also provide further insight into important practices for university and professional life, including writing, thinking, reading, viewing, research, and collaborative work.The unit introduces you to knowledge, ideas and practices that foster clear thinking, relational maturity, ethical strength, and cross-cultural competence. The unit draws on a variety of knowledge traditions, beginning with Noongar katitj (Noongar knowledge systems), particularly in relation to the Murdoch University campus.
