This for-credit subject is a preparatory mathematics subject intended for students who have not completed secondary school mathematics and who have insufficient background for the more advanced mathematics required for success in MAS162, MAS182 and MAS161. The topics covered include algebra; polynomials, exponential and logarithmic functions and their graphs; matrices; basic concepts of differential and integral calculus and applications.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Get up to speed with the base level of maths you’ll need for coding. Build or refresh your working knowledge of maths, covering algebra, trigonometry, derivatives, and more. You’ll be able to solve mathematical problems and progress to advanced courses.

Fundamentals of Mathematics

This subject was previously known as Applied Mathematics.This subject provides an introduction to differential and integral calculus, and basic ordinary differential equations. The concepts and techniques will be motivated and illustrated using mathematical models in engineering, the physical and biological sciences, commerce, economics, and the social sciences. Other topics include complex numbers and their applications.You are strongly advised NOT to enrol in MAS182 and MAS164 at the same time. In order to successfully complete MAS182, you will require the knowledge gained from the successful completion of MAS164.Murdoch University advises that students who do not successfully complete MAS164 before attempting MAS182 usually fail MAS182.Students who did not study mathematics at school, did not receive good marks, or have not studied mathematics in a long time should enrol in MAS164 before attempting MAS182. All enrolled students may access Murdoch&#39;s <a href="https://goto.murdoch.edu.au/MathsRefresher" target="_blank">Maths Refresher Program</a>. You are advised to review the worksheets in this program before beginning MAS182.Please Note: If you have not completed MAS164 but can show that you have a good background in the subject, you can apply to have this requirement waived via a Unit Validation Request. <a href="https://askmurdoch.custhelp.com/app/askmurdoch/answers/detail/a_id/3276" target="_blank">https://askmurdoch.custhelp.com/app/askmurdoch/answers/detail/a_id/3276</a>Some equivalent pre-requisites to MAS164 are: Year 11 Introduction to Calculus, along with a final scaled score of 55% or more in TEE Applicable Mathematics, OR a final scaled score of 55% or more in ATAR Mathematics Methods or WACE Mathematics (3C/3D).Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Learn how to use maths methods to solve problems in science and technology. Topics include the derivative, complex numbers, and the trigonometric functions. Gain confidence applying maths to engineering, science and economics. 

Introductory Calculus with Applications

This units covers fundamental topics in discrete mathematics, computer arithmetic and logic, including: recurrence relations, solving equations graphically and iteratively, computer arithmetic, basics of counting and discrete probability, matrices and linear transformations of the plane, propositional and predicate logic, mathematical induction, Boolean algebra and logic networks. Delve into the arm of maths computer science depends on.  Learn to use recursive definitions, write MATLAB programs, perform base conversions, explain aspects of computer arithmetic, solve using Boolean algebra and more.

Discrete Mathematics and Logic

Calculus and matrix algebra form the basis of the mathematical knowledge required to model physical, environmental, biological and engineering systems and investigate their behaviour. This subject assumes an understanding of the basic topics and develops them further. Vector and matrix operations, determinants, inverses and eigenvalues will be considered along with differentiation, integration, sequences and series, differential equations, and introductory multivariable calculus. Applications will be considered, with computer algebra packages used to reduce tedious calculations and present results.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online.
